Optional Extras payable when placing order or on collection

      Good afternoon all,

I have been visiting these forums for a couple of years but decided to join today to ask a question.

My mother is currently on the scheme and I am the driver of the vehicle, we are coming to the end of our lease, which will be September and it is the first time I have taken a car on the scheme and I have forgotten how it worked when I paid for the current vehicle.

My question is, when selecting Optional Extras and agreeing on them, do you pay for them upfront, when you place the order or upon collection of the vehicle?

I know the AP gets paid on collection, but I cannot find any information on the payment of extras.

      Many thanks.

        Hi Masquerade

Both times we have had Optional Extras added to the vehicle we have had to pay the dealer upfront at time of order, however I think it depends on the dealer, but I have no doubt that others here on the forum that have more experience with this will give you more information on which way is correct.

All depends on dealer and which options you require and their cost. Generally if its a few hundred pounds of extras most dealers will take a token payment or nothing at all but if it’s a few thousand they will normally require some money up front in case you cancel. A car with a few extras is easier for them to sell than one loaded with expensive options . Best bet is to speak with the dealer to establish what their policy is.

There is no policy on this. It is up to the individual dealer. Some want the AP up front as well.

I’m pretty sure I paid the AP & Cost of options on collection but it probably is dealer specific.

              Mine was from Volvo (Doncaster)

We always have cars with quite high AP’s and add a number of options as well. We have never had to pay more than a £500 deposit up front, even when the AP plus options has been £5k. Balance always payable on collection. We are happy to pay a £500 deposit to show intent, especially as we usually order before our 3 month order window in order to minimise lead times.

I ordered a VW Touran in the week gone by and with the low AP (less a discount) on this quarter I decided to add more extra’s than I normally do that add up to around £900 all told.

Previously with other Motability cars I’ve always paid off everything like extra’s and adaption’s so I’m just left with the AP to pay when I collect the car but as the sales guy asked if I minded paying a £500 deposit I decided to go with that and just as a bit of extra security I paid with a credit card that I always payoff at the end of the month.

My thinking behind paying a deposit is to off load the impact of a large Winter bill as its the Winter when I collect the car.

No upfront payment demanded for AP or extras at my VW dealership, either this time ( June ), or three years ago either.

I was told by ford when I ordered my Focus st3 I put £1k extras they told me I had to pay the lot at time of order which was £2350,I just paid it because I had it,I was seriously considering getting a bmw 320i bmw only wanted £500 upfront …when I spoke to motability they said a dealer is within his rights to ask for full payment.

Thank you all for the valuable input.

I am happy to pay something upfront, but due to all these delays I am reading about for the VW Tiguan, I want the ability to make a move on a different vehicle if VW take too long and something better comes along. I am not sure how cancelling an order works weeks or even months after it has been placed, if it impacts your ability to remain on the scheme or not, or even if you are penalised for that matter.
