Motability

After reading the forum for quite a while now and being on the scheme for nearly 10-yrs through various different factors and this is my personal opinion i feel motability really do need a complete review of all aspects of the scheme.

I for one have had no issue with motability, when an issue has arose apart from this vehicle change which when requesting a grant it simply went under the carpet, With our son now in his mid teens and growing a seven seater would still of been required and looking at the Vauxhall vivaro but ‘ap’ was a little out of our reach. We have now a ford focus active x which is lovely and ‘ap’ at the time was reasonable now you cannot even get it on the scheme with manual transmission. Dealer great cannot fault.

I feel though this will be the last as well may be the case for many simply down to many factors within the household, The rebates here and there are welcome and lets not forget you would not get this from a run of the mill lease company but then swing back the other way and over 3-yrs your paying circa £10k so swings and roundabouts. I feel rather than giving these rebates back do something for all members which will keep them on the scheme now and for years to come, Some incentive with shops-broaden it to everyday life.

Motability have been on a win-win over the last 2years especially with resale values of cars and although we have been given a little back do something that the customers relate with on a daily basis reduce ‘ap’ something seriously needs addressing to keep customers because although a car is a lifeline to many to heat your home will come before a car which if push comes to shove will result in the car being returned meaning loss of customers and then the spiral some becomes a gush.

The lack of cars on the scheme is questionably not motabilitys fault but the knock on affect of many factors will come with other brands, something somewhere as an alternate should be being looked at, No crystal ball but you see nothing coming out of motability which puts a glimmer of positivity on the situation, To simply pass on a rebate here and there with the majority although welcomed will not cut it and a temporary sticking plaster will not without care resolve a fragile situation we are all facing.

Not a rant at all with regard to motability it’s a life line but let’s not forget we pay for this it’s not given for nothing.

      Kind Regards/

@sikez I can’t complain with what you have wrote, in fact, I agree with it.  The problem as I see it is we, the end user, has no say in anything regarding putting our views forward to those who matter within the scheme.

As the price of vehicles rise which they inevitably will with inflation at 5.4% and heading towards 7% or more in the next few months, APs will have to rise to fill the gap of a PIP increase of only 3.1% in April.

As is always the case during inflation, benefits have to play catch-up and always fall behind.

Sorry for the gloom, but I can’t see any government seeing fixing the inequities of the Motability scheme as a priority…

There needs to be a review of Motability. It’s not right that a company set up to help disabled people get cars, using benefits, can make so much profit. It’s just wrong.
I think Motability should handle the insurance, the VAT and the transfer of benefits. Then each car manufacturer can have their own mini scheme that Motability would pay the money to. They should not profiting from selling our used cars.

Why is it fair that someone who puts 3000 miles on their car in 3 years doesn’t get something back from the higher resale value.

Jojoe, there was a review of the scheme two or three years ago with a number of recommendations to improve it, most have been ignored.

Without someone at Ministerial level to drive change, any new review will unfortunately end up like the last one.

Which is why if the scheme does not get reviewed internally it will crumble, I suspect only when the figures decline into serious numbers exiting the scheme will anything be looked at but by then it’s too late for the general folk who rely on the scheme.

It was noted that when the committee ask about the £2.3 billion pound profit. The respondent could not answer why.

It wouldn’t surprise me if that 2.3b profit wasn’t reclaimed by the government instead of refunding us and adjusting future AP’s and monthly payments

One thing that would shake Motability up a bit is if they extended the VAT free element on cars to apply to disabled private purchasers.

I agree Elliot. It seems crazy that we cannot purchase vehicles VAT free, yet motability get the 20% benefit reduction and and do not even give us the option to purchase anymore. And when they did we were asked to pay full market price.

I fully agree with @jojo’s comment “It’s not right that a company set up to help disabled people get cars, using benefits, can make so much profit. It’s just wrong”

The Motability Scheme was set up to provide disabled people with safe, reliable and affordable cars.

Sky rocketing AP’s being levied on top of taking one’s entire mobility benefits is in my opinion rapidly making one of the three original tenets of the scheme ‘affordable’ dubious at best.

I think Motability have to do something drastic, re-invent, or come up with some new ideas.

The monopoly needs to be broken. VAT free purchases and leases outside of Motability would go a long way to helping the disabled motorist.

The profits made by Motability are so vast that for me its verging on profiteering.

Making billions of £££ profit was never a central tenet of the scheme at its inception.

Its remit was quite clear and specific though.

“to provide disabled people with safe, reliable and affordable cars”

In my opinion something must be done to halt such eye watering levels of gratuitous greed because left unabated the money grab will continue to gather pace.

I’d also like to know who was the dude that decided to put the banks in charge of the scheme?

That’s akin to letting the convicts run the jail is it not?

Private VAT help would be a good addition or an alternative to Motability and a few years ago I read an item how they do it in some western countries where they don’t have a Motability system but have help in the purchase of new cars in the way of purchase tax relief.

Wouldn’t mind an alternative to run along side Motability but at least given a bit of choice.

Another area Motability could improve is having in-house adaption installers in stead of leaving us who need adaption at the mercy of private installers and as thing are now with the likes of hoists costing about £600 new and your old hoist being returned with your old car for the installer to remove and sell it for a couple of hundred quid on the likes of E-Bay.

If the Government allowed VAT free leasing for the disabled all of a sudden the private leasing companies would be an affordable alternative to Motability. All it would need then is those leasing companies to drop the credit checks and have the ability to receive the benefit payments directly so that they are guaranteed their money.
