The Motability website has a big section promoting various modifications that can help make a vehicle easier to use but I wonder what their view is of third party mods.

When looking for a car I obviously had a list of things that I wanted but inevitably there were some compromises, one of which was a powered tailgate. My particular disability has left me with a very much shortened torso and after I’ve opened the boot on the Hyundai Ioniq Electric car that I have just collected I can’t reach the bottom to pull it shut. This is not the end of the world as I have a stool I keep in the boot to stand on but I have seen some retro-fit electric rams that I could fit. These look virtually identical to what is there now and the only real work to install them is to pick up some power that is on the ACC position on the ignition. Lots of cars now have electric tailgates and the only difference I would have is a separate remote control fob.

Would Motability be likely to allow me to have some fitted (I could always refit the originals at the end of the lease)?

Is there any chance I could get Motability to fit these or contribute to their cost if I found an installer ?

      Many thanks

      Paul

Hi Paul, I think the popular response to your question would be to contact Motability and explain to them the issue. They are there to help and I’m sure that if some form of retrofit cannot be carried out, then a swap may be possible to a car with a powered boot with a low down sensor. Either way a discussion with Motability should help to get you into the vehicle you need.
        Good luck.

? I will be remembered for nothing but had great fun doing it ?

One of these is a much cheaper option….

I was thinking that… Something else I’ve seen used is a stick with a hook on it to grab the handle.

I just get my butler to do it for me.

That looks almost identical to the one in the boot of our existing car but when I came to fit one to the Ioniq I discovered there was absolutely nowhere to attach it. Seeing your picture though prompted me to have another go and surprisingly the suction mount canabalised from an old phone mount has stuck  🙂

                So thanks to all

                Paul

(I’m still going to save up for the ‘leccy version>
