        Unfortunately yes Winston.

Mainly due to a number of factors, all medical. I am diabetic on insulin so I suffer from neuropathy. This results in severe cramps in my legs and other areas, especially through the night.

However the main reason is That I have stage 4 Kidney disease. A main side effect of that is insomnia.

ptsd related nightmares etc, particularly this time of year. wife died 16th december 2003.

her death triggered other issues related to military service etc that until then hadnt been known to be a problem. i am about to go and try to get some sleep having been up until 4 am and up again at 7. been like that most of xmas.

hot soaks in bath before bedtime with lavender infusions help at times. i try and avoid alcohol and medical chemical interventions where i can. but sometimes it becomes necessary.

the problem is much better than it was at one stage thanks to combat stress a military charity, i was directed to them by h4h as there was an 18 month waiting list for nhs support.

No I don’t Winston. I take a hell of a lot of medication as it is. It is something I have to cope with the best I can. I do take meds for neuropathic pain but It’s hit and miss to be honest.

I don’t have problems getting off to sleep. It’s after an hour that I wake in pain with cramps in my feet and legs. The only thing that works is getting up for a few hours and doing stuff to try take my mind of the pain.

              Do you suffer?

Yeah Joss I’m a long time sufferer, more mental than physical , started in my late teens but horrendous now

and on the nights I manage a few hours I can wake up 20 times or so

my dreams are crazy, I wish there was a way to record them! ( maybe one day ) I get sleep paralysis every now and again too!

i also like a lot on here take a shed load of meds, I don’t drink or smoke , doubling up on bed time meds or sleeping tablets don’t really help in the long run either

going through a particular lousy phase with sleep at the mo

I wish I could hit the standby button or pull the batteries out for a while ??

I’ve been having issues with insomnia and chronic stress, but nothing seems to help. I have tried various empty pills, which do not seem to help at all. Can anyone tell me the best way to solve this problem?

@Hannah It seems the chronic stress is the issue. Have talked to your GP? Asked to see the practise counsellor, if they have one. The can help over multiple session to work out what is causing your stress. If the practise don’t have a counsellor, then ask GP to make a referral  to one.

                        Good luck

Have you tried the herbal side, such as Ashwagandha KSM-66

My dauhter struggles to sleep, in fact she doesn’t sleep. My daughters issue is mainly down to to her special needs, ASD and to some degree her disability. She also sufferes high levels of anxiety. She is prescrbed Sylentio (Melatonin) by her Paed. It seldom works and won’t diagnose her with insommia untill she is 16+

                          Hope you find something 🙂

yeah it depends whats at bottom of it. if your mind gets too active at times, like mine does then i have found getting up and doing something even watching tv etc for a few hrs will often help.

oddly a medecine prescribed for other reasons has helped with sleep, amitriptline its an antidepressant but i was prescribed it for its pain releif and muscle relaxant qualities as i was strugling with back pain and sciatica at night. i sleep a lot better 5 or 6 hours sometimes which is a huge improvement. sometimes you wake up feeling a bit hungover. but in my case the side effects well worth the benefit.

I Also take Amitriptline 25mg for pain @mitch but, at a lower dose than would otherwise be given for anxiety/depession. I don’t find it heps with sleep as you do, but, were all different.

I also take Duloxetine 90mg, another depressant for pain, which is also has an analgesic properties. This knock me out “away with the fairies” so to speak.

There are 18 items on my repeat, personally I’m not a fan of all these meds but, needs must.

I’m another on Amitriptiline for pain, I have a regular prescription but only take it when needed. It does work for sleep and GP’s are happy to prescribe it as it’s not addictive. Only downside is you can feel tired the next day.
