Gary VDoes anyone know if there is any chance of haggling over extras?
Has anyone actually tried and did they get anywhere.

Like fuel and mats?, I very much doubt i,t given the way things currently are, but worth asking, nothing to lose, I have done it in the past with success.
February 23, 2023 at 8:18 pm #210211There no harm in trying, a couple of years ago it was well worth the haggle however with the troubles with car deliveries its become a sellers market so they have us over a barrel but things are starting to turn the tables again to become a buyers market.
Aim for a 10% discount on extras was about the right sum a few years ago but you will be really lucky to get anything off the AP but again we did 4 or 5 years ago.

Gary VWas just fishing, thinking along lines like discounts on things like panoramic roof or tech pack, these are things that are around £1000 – £1500.
I have no qualms about asking, just wondering if anyone has tried and what outcome they got.

steveThe problem is dealers don’t get much profit from organising Motability cars. The ones I have met, often say the paperwork and hoops to jump through are not worth the reward and they have to do it because their Manufacturer makes it a condition.
Whether it has changed now but Motability also had a policy of their own service intervals rather than the manufacturers. Hence dealers often missed out on gaining the full service costs plus they are not allowed to replace the tyres as this has to be Kwik fit – so more opportunities lost.

RogerWilkoYes, for many dealers today, the profit is in repairs and optional extras, they take on Motability or did, more for the monthly sales targets than profit on the Motability sale. They have a dealership target and get money and incentives from that.
that’s why some dealerships would push certain Motability cars over others.
Today, tines have changed a lot and with demand and shortages they are not pushing targets as much

I’ve always found it quite easy to get a discount on extras. With VW dealers I had to haggle, but with our current car the BMW dealer offered 15% discount on options without me even asking. That was on top of a £500 discount negotiated off the AP. That was less than 2 years ago. I suspect that the £500 off the AP would be nigh on impossible now (although I’d still be trying) but I’d be confident that I’d still get the discount off the extras.
Never believe a dealer who gives you a hard luck story about how little they make out of a Motability transaction. As well as a fixed handling fee (which reimburses them several times over for the little time that they spend dealing with the average Motability customer), every Motability order counts towards their volume targets for manufacturer, group and dealer bonus schemes, which run into £’000s. If they realise that you know how it all works they tend to reduce the BS and do a deal. Good luck.
