I’ve recently had a speeding ticket, and it’s very likely i’m getting 4-5 points, as i done 66mph in a 50mph zone. Would motability remove me from the insurance? I’m scared to tell them incase they remove me from insurance

It s a requirement to inform the insurance and Motability, however unless it changed when the insurance switched over recently, Motability have aways permitted up to 6 points for any driver.

There are 3 bands for speeding offences for each speed limit. In a 50mph zone, 66mph would put you right at the bottom of the middle band (which, for 50 mph zones is 66-75 mph). The sentencing guidelines state that the penalty for this band is a Band B fine (the second lowest) plus either 4 to 6 points or a disqualification for 7 to 28 days. If it’s a straightforward speeding offence with no other aggravating factors, you will most likely just get the fine and points.

As you are right at the bottom of the middle band, the sentencing Magistrate is most likely to give you 4 points and a Band B fine. I doubt that Motability’s insurers will be terribly concerned about that (if it’s the only points you have) but, as the poster above says, you need to report it to them.

I’ve had two lots of speeding tickets, years apart, but it never affected me and my lease. I most certainly did inform them, as you should.

Mine were 97mph on an A road and 103mph on a motorway in an auto Clio, who knew the Clio could even go that fast, three up to boot!!

As @Glos-Guy 4-6 points and band B fine, which is 75-125% of net pay over £100. Benefits aren’t taken into account, though you can still be fined.

Yep it’s the only points i’d have ever gotten, but I was just wondering how Motability would react to it, it was just a pure judgment from me.

Its a tough one to take and unfortunate you just come into the next band with regards to speed above the limit.

Reporting to insurance company is an absolute no brainer, it must be done. Just imagine the consequences if you did not report and had an accident. As others have said it will be fine, just report to insurance, pay the fine, take the points and move on (but of course be wary about picking up further points). 🙂

It’s a good job that they were years apart, as both those speeds should have resulted in 6 points each, which would have likely resulted in you getting a ban. At each of those speeds you could have had a short disqualification 😱

I’ve had two speeding tickets in the last 10 years. One for doing 36mph in a 30mph zone and one for doing 49mph in a 50mph zone on a motorway. I opted to pay the fines and go on a speed awareness course to avoid the points. I informed Motability but no action was needed. Incidentally I learnt more on the courses than I expected so not a complete waste of time apart from the cost!

had my first fine 2 years back going 66 in a 50 (I hadn’t realised the speed had changed from 70 to 50). I wasnt offered speed awareness but got a 100 fine and 3 points.
