      Hi guys!!

I have a motability car, had one for past 5 years, I also during that time had a ‘free car tax’ letter, I used on my wife’s car who would fun heron’s for me etc.

The tax letter had expired, so I phoned for a new one, and the lady on the phone confirmed she’d send out a new letter, but it never arrived. So I phoned them yesterday, and was informed that the tax letter was cancelled because I have a motability car. My impression was I’m actually paying a monthly fee for the whole package of the car, that includes Tax and Insurance.

Is this the case where if you have a motability car you lose the the tax for another vehicle?

I get Higher pip, due to a Spinal cord injury. C4 C5.

I’m not being ungrateful or anything, I’m just wondering if others have encountered this.

      Thank you for reading, Chris.

Hi, You only get the tax exemption on one car, if you have a Motability car it will be used for that.

Hi Chris, my understanding is that you can only have one vehicle tax exemption at a time. Your Motability car automatically benefits from not having to pay VED, so is not factored into the price you pay for the car. Technically, this means that you shouldn’t have claimed exemption on the 2nd car in the past. You may be better of just dropping it now in case they try to apply the VED retrospectively!!

Free VED can only be used only on one car!

If you have a Motabilty car plus a private car, Motability automatically use the free VED on your Motability car. However what you can do is, if, your Motability car has the lowest cost VED, you can tell Motability you want to pay the VED and then apply the free VED to your wifes car if it has a higher rate 🙂

Junglegreen, thank you for your reply.

Yes, I didn’t argue the case with them on the phone, I expected the decision.

I was guess I was courious, I just assumed it was normal as I was given the letter, and also I had a motability car.

Thank you for the kind response.

                  Ah Kezo.

That’s good to know, so do they actually agree to you paying the lesser tax and allowing you to use the letter for a higher tax, (I mean this in a way of its pretty straightforward and they expect your request)

Thank you again for your kind response

Yes! However you first have to be seen as having an entitlement to pay VED on the Motability car. Once thats sorted you can apply for free VED on your wifes car. There’s a few that do it on here and I believe @Glos Guy may be another.

Kezo. Thank you. I’ll keep it in mind for next time.
