Best Broadband – ISP Provided Router

My Sky TV / Broadband deal is up. After 25 years I’ve taken the decision to ditch them. Mid contract £10 increase was the final straw, plus we are watching less TV.

Anyone got any recommendations for broadband providers, I’m thinking more about the strength / quality of the router they supply. I’m not interested in Virgin, the cable that supplies my house goes up a garden wall, we have a monitored alarm system and it would be easy to cut the connection.

Without a doub’t the provider @joss uses, which I can’t think of the router they use at the moment. Your still using BT cables though with prety much the same speeds as you get now.

I’m with Virgin 350 and use my owner router (Archer AX73), I thinking of looking at one of the mobile providers come january as I’m going to ditch Virging TV box and going for either a recordable Freesat or freeview box 🙂

Yep this is what I’m thinking, the only problem is the recordable freesat box is around £250. I’m thinking of just streaming and using catch up. I know a few people with Sky Glass, they all say they very quickly got used to not recording anything. I noticed Sky do a streaming puck package for £38 that includes 65mb broadband, Netflix and the sky channels.

The outlay might be £250 but considering how much you pay over 2yrs for you base TV package it works out aot cheaper at £10.40 a month, cheaper if you use the apps on your TV or buy a non recordable box!

mrs kezo would be happier with a recordable box, so its in my best interests to bow to her commands ?

We live in a freeview lite area and dont get (comm 7) all HD channels, so likely be Freesat, which some TV’s have built in Freesat tuners Samsung etc.

Cheers Joss, I’ve heard about Zen. I’m sure they supplied the internet to my business unit a few years back. Ive just had a look, it’s £36 for my current speed. I’m moving from Sky to try and save a few quid. I’m looking at spending around £25 for 64mb.

@joejo Because offer a fixed price of £36.00 for Unlimited Fibre 2 (18 Month contract) and no price increasess ever. I think it’s a damn good offer. When you consider that most ISP’s add inflation rate + what ever the  CPI is annually, then it does not take long for other ISP’s to jump massively ever year.

So no deals joejo but no price increases annually.

@joss what speed are you getting with Fibre 2?

Zen quoted me for both Fibre 1 & 2 but, were still only copper around here (No BT FTTC or FTTP).

When we were with Sky, the Proliant thats in the loft sruggled especially when the rest of the house was using the net. However, at the time I was sure it was down to the 2 Sky q boxes, hence why we went back to Virgin 350 bb.

We have had Vodafone for almost 12 months now on their essentials tariff £12 a month for 38mbps full fibre to house and is fast enough for us, you can get Fibre 2, 73mbps for £20 a month. The essentials tariff is available to anyone who claims certain benefits including PIP, we have had no problems and get the speeds quoted.

I also need to add, if you have full fiber to house you land phone line is disconnected, you can plug your phone into your router and keep the same number but your calls are made over the Internet so if you have a power cut you won’t have a phone. We’ve not got a phone plugged in so it makes no difference to us.

Shell Broadband are doing 64mb for £25 a month and you get a £110 Amazon voucher, ideal for Christmas if it arrives in time. I’m assuming it will be the same as Sky & BT as they all use the Openreach cables. The only outage we ever had was down to the local cabinet losing power, we would have had this problem no matter what supplier we were with.

† Our lowest ever price is based on Shell Energy’s Full Fibre 100 product – currently available at the promotional price of £26.99, as compared with our out-of-contract price of £42.74 – when switching via Shell Energy (by calling or visiting our website) during the promotional period to an 18 month contract.

△ Your monthly charges may increase each year from 2024 on or after 1 April by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate of inflation plus up to 3%. For example, if you’re paying £30 per month, and the January CPI figure is 2%, we may apply an increase of up to 5%. At 5%, your monthly price would increase to £31.50 after 1 April 2024.  This what I was talking about in my previous post JoJoe. Not such a bargin really.

. That is not true, it is optional at this stage as not all ISPs offer VOIP on their networks and the copper switch off is happening in phases and will be running into 2025. Also, the service you have is not “Full Fibre”, it’s a broadband package that is Fibre between exchange and cabinet, then copper from cabinet to your property.

                                          @Joss
. You do realise the price promise applies to contract length and not an indefinite length of time? If your contract length is 18 or 24 months, you will not see a price rise, but in that time if they increase prices, new customers will pay that price and once your contract is up for renewal, you will be paying the new price. Also, £36 for 68Mbps is not a good price, I pay £40 for 1.2Gbps fibre.

The Vodafone Essentials package is looking like the best option @JoJoe. Let me add, Sky Stream has very limited channels, when I got the Puck it had less than a quarter of the channels available via the dish and so I reverted back to the dish.

It is true, we were with BT before and had fiber to cabinet, as you say the copper switch off is happening in phases, it’s already happened in our area. Anyone with existing copper can stay as they are, but anyone switching or even getting a new contract with their current supplier must have fiber to premises, if full fiber is in their street, and have their copper connection disconnected, I asked both BT and Vodafone if we could just stay as we were but they both said no.

Openreach came round and fitted the new fibre cable, I actually footed the ladder while it was fitted, the fiber cables were fitted to the telegraph poles in our street a couple of months before.

@Joss.

I am not entirely sure what you are talking about here???

Do you get told when your line goes fibre? We have an alarm system that I’m told will not work when we get fibre.

By fibre do you mean Fiber to the premises (FTTP) or Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC)

Generally if fiber is being installed to the street cabinate, then usually there is some form of advertising locally. You can also look at your local exchange to see if there are any up grades to your street cab.

If full fibre to the premises, then you might get a letter informing you of the fact.

Regarding your alarm system. Who told you it might not work???

Incase of a power cut or your broadband is down (FTTP), the nurse call featurs won’t work. In the case of older people with either no mobile or weak indoor signal a back up phone can be used. Unfortunately this method is little use to those who wear call tags.

Things are starting to move on a little bit in this area with the use of e-sim devices, that connect to a central unit. Though if you lack or have weak mobile signal they aren’t much use.

Put your post code into the Openreach website, it will tell you if full fibre is available in your area, if not you can choose to be kept updated.

                                                      https://www.openreach.com/fibre-broadband/ultrafast-full-fibre-broadband

I actually saw the Openreach workers putting the fibre cables in to the telegraph poles on our street so knew it was available. I’d been a BT customer for years ending up with fibre to cabinet however they kept hiking the prices and I ended up paying £76 a month, BT adding BT Sport, something I never watched or asked for, and also some add ons to the land line phone that I didn’t have plugged in.

I went online to change my contract but it would not let me choose a fibre to cabinet contract I could only choose full fibre, I rang them up and they told me as full fibre was in my area I could not have fibre to cabinet and would have to swap to full fibre. I then read about Vodafone Essentials and went for that but they also told me I could not have fibre to cabinet and explained that my copper land line would be disconnected. It’s £12 a month for 12 months and you can cancel at any time, when the 12 months is up, I think, you have to resubmit your NI number so they can check you are still in receipt of any of the qualifying benefits. Our 12 months is up early December and it’s still available and still £12 a month. You can pay £20 a month for faster speeds, for £12 a month it’s  38 Mbps I check the speed regularly and it’s normally around 37 Mbps I’ve never seen it below 36 Mbps. I posted the link for Vodafone earlier in this thread.

It’s a monitored alarm that’s wired into the phone socket, if the alarm triggers it rings the control room and they can listen in. If we go voip which I’m hearing adverts for on the radio saying is happening, the system won’t work. I’m assuming voip is happening when we get fibre?

Ive just checked Openreach and it says fibre is planned between now and December 2026.
