BrydoMitch “battlestar galactica” is one of my favourite sci-fi series of all time.
I enjoyed “ready player one”.
January 12, 2022 at 12:42 pm #174254
BrydoIn fact “Katee Sackhoff” from “battlestar galactica”has the main role in “Another life”
January 12, 2022 at 5:57 pm #174285“Another life” i found brilliant so 10/10
“Don’t look up” I was unsure about. However after rewatching, gave it an 7/10
“The Silent Sea” on NF. Korean sci fi During a perilous 24-hour mission on the moon, space explorers try to retrieve samples from an abandoned research facility steeped in classified secrets. 9/10
“Squid Game”on NF. More Korean sci fi. Hundreds of cash-strapped players accept a strange invitation to compete in children’s games. Inside, a tempting prize awaits — with deadly high stakes. 10/10
“Lost in space” 3 seasons and a great watch on NF. After crash-landing on an alien planet, the Robinson family fights against all odds to survive and escape. But they’re surrounded by hidden dangers. 10/10
“The Umbrella Academy” 2 seasons. NF. Reunited by their father’s death, estranged siblings with extraordinary powers uncover shocking family secrets — and a looming threat to humanity. Loved this to bits. 10/10

Have a hi-def recording of 2001 A Space Odyssey which gets watched regularly. Have a CD set of Hitch Hiker’s Guide which I’m trying to find time to watch. Just wish they’d make something as original as Farscape. Most modern stuff seems to be all-action blow-up-everything productions.

GeorgieI’d be surprised if we ever get anything as bold as Farscape again from any of the majors (8/10 – excellent first 3 seasons but, imho, it went off a bit after Zhaan departed). Ditto Babylon 5 (10/10. I liked the savagely curtailed Crusade, too). Far too abstract and abstruse (guess who got a Word of the Day calendar for Christmas . . . ). Serious Sci-Fi with long term, over-arching plots apparently doesn’t appeal to the ‘core demographic’ – young adult viewers.* Try getting a long run series without a couple of good-looking young men/women in main roles. Remember how long they managed to drag out The X Files far beyond it’s sell by date. Could have wrapped it up in 5 seasons, but no . . .
(*Which is, of course, a ridiculous approach because other than children (where ‘pester power’ is expected to get their parents to cough up the cash), young adults are the ones with the least money to waste on all the products pushed in the adverts during these shows.)
The Expanse (10/10) has just gone the same way – 5 books over 5 seasons, then book 6 compressed into 6 episodes to the point where it was almost impossible to work out what was going on. At least they didn’t resort to a Game of Thrones ending, and there’s room for it to be picked up in the future for the last three books in the story – either series or films, as they did (circling back to the beginning) with Farscape.

GeorgieWhich reminds me – my sister sent me this one yesterday:

“Scream not working because space make deaf.” That needs to go on a T-shirt . . .
January 19, 2022 at 7:09 pm #174915Egg demon come when eat bad noodle should go one the back of the shirt. Funniest thing I’ve seen in ages.

GraemeThe Expanse!
A friend recommended it to me a few weeks ago and because sci-fi is my fav genre i started to binge watch it.
I’ve now watched ALL six seasons and i have to say that it was completely & utterly brilliant – with the exception of the final two episodes of season 6 which i was less than impressed with)
If you haven’t watched it do give it a go!
January 20, 2022 at 11:21 am #174953What passes as sci-fi?
Is an asteroid heading to earth? Happened before, just ask the dinosaurs ?.
What about life going on as normal but on another planet?
I watched “Travellers” which basically is humans coming back from the future then the majority of the episodes are just about life on earth.
First contact is my particular favourite like the original “Star Trek” series but using “sci-fi” in the loosest of terms is a turn off for me and a bit lazy to be honest.

GeorgieI may be very late to the party here (2018), but has anyone else watched Electric Dreams on Amazon? Ten Philip K. Dick short stories as modern sci-fi. So far, so excellent.
January 27, 2022 at 9:31 am #175485Yes Georgie I watched that some time back. Good watch

Mike CooperThe wheel of time on Amazon Prime was a good watch, which makes a change as lots of the sci-fi stuff on there is low budget, compared to Netflix. The Boys was a decent series as well,it’s a superheroes gone bad theme with more than a hint of Tarantino blood and gore fest if you like that type of thing. The already mentioned Umbrella Academy is probably the best thing I’ve watched on Netflix lately and series 3 will hopefully be released this year.

ReneBattlestar Galactica has one of the best soundtracks ever, Starbucks song (the piano piece).
Don’t look up i found a bit naff, bit like a bootleg Idiocracy. Kinda same thing, except no President Camacho.
Umbrella Academy and The Boys were already mentioned, loved both. I’d add “Happy” too, despite not being a Sci-Fi series in the general sense, another fun one.
In regards to Sci-Fi, didn’t enjoy Nightflyers (slow/boring). Loved Squid Game, liked Altered Carbon, and for movies.. Well there’s so many, really. Surprisingly enjoyed Passengers, I am Mother, Paul (big Simon Pegg fan), Love and Monsters, Elysium, Total Recall (both old and remake), District 9, Valerian, Enders Game, Serenity, Jumper, Moon (2009), hm..
Generally, if i had to suggest a movie that you absolutely should watch today, it would be Edge of Tomorrow. I personally love Tom Cruise (don’t care what he does for religion etc), and Emily Blunt. Just a fun movie, watched it like 5 times already, probably one of my favourites. And in case you have seen that already, watch Boss Level. Similar, but with Frank Grillo adding his own kinda charme.

ReneForgot to log in, so no edit – speaking of Edge of Tomorrow/Tom Cruise, Oblivion and Minority Report are great too, imho.
January 27, 2022 at 10:43 am #175491
ReneSigh, sorry.
Hardcore Henry is great too, maybe not particularly “future-sci-fi”, but a full movie in first person, was very fictional feeling.
And last suggestion, Upgrade.
Rarely seemed to be mentioned, it’s a really good one though.

GeorgieThe 5th Element. I have lost count of how many times I’ve watched that particular DVD. The soundtrack throughout is pretty awesome, imho. Armageddon also ‘tick – v.g.’
Also sort of, kinda, been re-watching Deep Space Nine and Voyager. Other than Quark, Rom and Nog (DS9), and Seven of Nine (V), they really aren’t as good as I remembered. Don’t even get me started on Enterprise – Porthos was far and away the best character!
January 28, 2022 at 8:02 am #175524@Rene Sadly Upgrade is not available in this country (UK) Looks like firing up VPN then

GeorgieI might be sliding this one under the wire, but this afternoon I plan to watch the 1963 “Toho classic” of King Kong vs. Godzilla. I don’t know if it’s the US release (Kong wins) or the Japan release (Godzilla wins), but I know who I’ll be rooting for and he doesn’t have hair . . .
🙂
January 28, 2022 at 12:59 pm #175550Watched on you tube @Rene. Great film for sure.
