So, we picked up our Kona EV on Monday as arranged. There was a prepared a video introduction/tour of the main features which is very useful as we can refer back to it when we want/need to. When I said that the tour was around our car Mrs Bfoandc thought I meant a tour around a Kona Ultimate and was really surprised when it was OUR car! Great idea!

We stayed overnight to give us time to ‘play’ around with some of the features and try out the ‘public’ charging systems before heading for our 2.5 hr trip to get our ferry home. Glad we had planned to do so as the mats ordered hadn’t turned up and so we could go back to the dealers to collect them and also to ask some questions that arose in our first usage.

The car behaved brilliantly on our journey home and the predicted and actual range seemed pretty spot-on and is certainly more accurate than any fossil fuel vehicle we have used. When we got home we connected the 3 pin cable charger to the car and let it run all night. It is now 100% charged and is suggesting a range of 319 miles! As a vehicle this is certainly a game changer for us, as fuel is pretty costly anywhere but it is even more so on an island. The tech also managed to impress Mrs Bfoandc who loved the head up display!

There is so much to learn on the car that it will take us some time to get used to what it offers but it certainly has met my need for more comfort than our last car and waving goodbye to fossil fuel is a strange, but really positive feeling.

Love the Colour, Kona is a great Car. You should get the number plates with the green strip for EVs.

                      Hi bfoandc

I see you’ve got electricity out in the wilderness now but when are they getting around to putting some roads down.?

Someday, soon, this range will be the norm. I don’t think we need more than 300 miles in a single charge, it just adds to the increased cost to the car with little upside.

                          Thanks for all the comments.

It is a very interesting time. We still aren’t even 100% sure about getting a home charger fitted. You’ll have noticed we live in the middle of a field and, yes, we do have a track not a road, the track does lead to a road – twisty, single track with passing places. We are used to having to plan many activities (eg: 40 mins return to get fuel) so planning to get a charge isn’t that different and there are charging points closer than that. As we can have sheep and/or cattle any home charging will have to be done at ‘appropriate’ times. We also live in rented accommodation which adds complexity as does the ‘exposed’ location.

The car has really impressed me so far and yes the boot is smaller than we are used to, but we actually got as much stuff into the boot as we did in our previous Ateca. The range on the Kona does make the difference to us, since it limits the number of occasions on which we need to re-charge. The charging network however does need some attention so it delivers what it promises. That will, I’m sure change. However, the savings we’ll make (as petrol/diesel is even more expensive here) just can’t be ignored.

Looks lovely in blue mate, and glad you’ve had the same experience of all the other Kona owners.  Best range I’ve had so far on a charge is 341 miles!  You’ll fully work out EV driving in a few weeks.

Regen and not using the footbrake is the hardest part to get used too.  My startup procedure is land tracking off, auto hold on and then select the drive.  With the regen, in the menu’s there is an Auto Recuperation setting, turn that on, you will get Auto Recuperation shown on the speedo with a small white box above it, when driving and a car in front is in range, the box will go blue.  As the car in front slows, your car will automatically slow using regen.  I now use that exclusively, and drive in level 0 (Coasting) and just use the flappy paddles for additional breaking (works just like changing down in a conventional car)  Pulling the left paddle and holding it gives max regen, but you will occasionally have to boost that with the foot brake.  Only other time I use the footbrake is once at a full stop to put the auto hold on.

Over 8k since April, averaging 4.8miles/km and total running cost to date £243.78, BMW at 51mpg would have cost me £958!  Enjoy your fun cheap motoring 🙂

Lovely colour and you win the prize for the most scenic (if not entirely practical) charging location! Living that far from a petrol station (and on an island) I can most definitely see the appeal. Enjoy the car.

Thanks again for all the comments.

sif, I did enjoy the ventilated seats on our journey back.

Intranicity, I’ll pass the advice on to Mrs Bfoandc as she is the driver, but thanks very much for the excellent suggestions.

Landyman, a larger boot would be good but at least the floor is level and beneath it there is some more storage, even if it it isn’t very deep.

Winston, I’ll try and get some interior photos tomorrow and I suppose it depends on what is meant by ‘practical’.

At the risk of going off topic I’ll share a photo of part of the view that is behind the car:
