We had a a small second car for a while and occasionally we would put the wheelchair in it and drive around. The wheelchair could fit standing up,if wee removed the parcel shelf, but rattled around the place so we would fold the back seats down and lay it flat. We got to the stage that we just left the backseats down all the time, didnt look great but didnt bother us too much.
Would anyone do this to get a car that had everything else except a decent size boot?

August 12, 2021 at 1:48 am #161474Hello Brydo,
I hope you and the fam are keeping well?
as you know it’s just me and the Dog so my back seats are permanently down, I have blankets , a king size duvet and all manner of cushions stuffed down beside the doors to make it as comfy and safe as possible for him
It’s ideal as we can both go for a wee lay down ( or kip ) if we are away for the day to give my back a break from sitting upright in the driving seat
did this for the past 4/5 years so my car is a permanent 2 seater ?
parcel shelf is stored in a cupboard in my house
I know it’s not exactly what your post is about mate lol

SueBrydo – People! Sadly my days of anything else in the back seats have gone….
It’s me and two of my boys plus my mum. I’m mum’s driver of all things and all appointments, especially since dad died late last year and even before he died, I was the one who ferried them to the hospital etc. She used to drive her and dad to the shops but she has completely lost her confidence since firstly the lockdowns and then dad’s death.
Youngest son does drive and has his own car but if we are doing family things, it makes more sense to pile into the one car, we would struggle in his as he has a tiny car although weirdly, my wheelchair fits in his boot standing up (nothing else does mind) and it is so low down that it’s get the winches out to get me out of the thing. My middle son is my full time carer, where I go, he goes otherwise I cannot do anything.
Eldest also comes in the car from time to time, he doesn’t live at home anymore, so we can have anything from 2 to 5 people in the car on a regular basis.
Winston – I love those photos! Reminds me of my first car, the early days of my marriage and festivals.
August 12, 2021 at 10:02 am #161512I only put the back seats down when shopping as there’s no room in the boot as that is reserved for the scooter and hoist, goes without saying no room for anyone else except her in doors.
I have the back seat types that slide forward to give an extra 150mm plus space in the boot and is a must have feature for me now.
The way I use the car is a bit of a pain because although lowering the back seat to accommodate the scooter is an easy option when choosing a car it’s that odd occasion when we have a couple of grand-children with us and the seats need to be used.
The lockdowns have made things worst because of how the family go about there working lives now whereas the start of 2020 (pre-COVID-19) the kids where with us 70% of our journeys but since then its something like 1% and I’m currently looking at a slightly smaller car than my current one that I think I can just get by on but if things truly return to normal and I needed those back seats 70% of the time again I will be up a creek.

you don’t need the back seats down for your dog he would fit in the glove box!
August 12, 2021 at 12:26 pm #161532He might , but I sure wouldn’t ??
