as you will all know by now i am a year away from anew lease and am already stressing about what i can or will be able to get. the minis have gone already. i cant do electric or plugin so my main search on the site is for petrol hybrids but i have started looking at petrols looking at anything with a mpg over 40. as thats what i got from the 2l countryman i had.
vauxhall have the mokka listed as a 1.2 turbo GS for £846 mpg 46 and a 1.2 turbo hybrid ultimate for £1246.mpg 57. yet its listed as petrol only.
likewise frontera hybrid GS £415 £84.55/wk. 53 mpg.
grandland ultimate £996 t/a mpg 51
does anyone rate the vauxhalls i know its only a 1.2 but the mpg’s arent bad and the looks arent too bad for an suv/crossover.

the best 2 as far as economy goes seems to be hybrids:
toyota yaris cross design £311 £84.55/wk mpg 62.8.
kia niro hybrid 3 £1546.00 t/a mpg 64.2.
neither though would you say are lookers.
March 30, 2025 at 12:08 pm #300309Toyota Yaris Cross Design every time, Toyota have a reputation of under estimating their figure, you will easily achieve 62.8 mpg or more, plus they are bullet proof and trouble free.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
March 30, 2025 at 3:24 pm #300317The 1.2l engine is seen across the Stellantis group (Peurgeot, Citreon, DS, Vauxhall/Opel, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Jeep, Leapmotor and Abarth) Vauxhall sits at the lower end of the Stellantis group.
As @Oscarmax say Toyota hybrids are the best and bullet proof. Toyota also supply hybrid engine technology to Suzuki.
March 30, 2025 at 3:54 pm #300318I’ve got a Kia Hybrid 3. Excellent fuel economy. Get 55-60 mpg. Fill up every two weeks with £40
March 30, 2025 at 4:40 pm #300319I know a couple of people who are diehard Vauxhall fans, both have recently gotten Mokka’s and are not impressed at all with the build quality or the range. One is the E-Mokka, claimed range 252, in reality even now the weather is warming up he’s struggling to get 170-180, over the Winter it was well under 150.
The other, of more interest to you, is a 1.2 petrol manual, it’s his first Motability car, he’s only had it a couple of months, coming from a 5yr old Astra. He was not happy when I last spoke to him, real world MPG was woefully short of the published figures, he’s just managing to get 40 on careful mixed driving and certainly isn’t a boy racer.
As said above the Toyota hybrids are in a class of their own.
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!
March 30, 2025 at 5:36 pm #300321Mild Hybrid (MHEV) ohave a generator instead of a starter motor powered by a tiny 48v lithium battery to aid the start stop system and are the most basic of all hybrids.
March 30, 2025 at 7:23 pm #300322i need to go and see them in the metal so to speak. the pictures maybe dont do them justice and i suppose i am sat in them rather than looking at them lol.
unless the countryman comes back at a reasonable ap i reckon at the moment its between the yaris cross, niro and the juke i have at the moment but upgraded to tekna.
March 30, 2025 at 7:29 pm #300323@kezo, the whole mhev full hybrid i really find confusing and some manufacturers are not clear what their option is.
i can see i am going to have issues this time round.
so the plan will be to extend if i can and take my time to sort the wheat from the chaff and then try for a stock car.

The Vauxhalls you list are mild hybrid…
March 30, 2025 at 9:16 pm #300326Vauxhall, Fiat, Citreon, Peugeot , AlfaRomeo, Jeep, DS and now Leapmotor are all Stellantis and share the same underlying technologies.
At least their 1.2 hybrid has a chain driven cam rather than normal 1.2’s wet belt.
All the non plug in hybrids are also due to be phased out by 2030. Only plug in hybrids will remain till 2035.
March 31, 2025 at 9:05 am #300334Hi Mitch, if it helps.
Ive run a Kia 1.6 hybrid for 3 years, it has been faultless and Im not getting another one because my needs mean I want something a bit higher.
I am tentatively going EV.
Im in Anglesey this week from Manchester, 105 miles door to door mostly motorway and A roads, 60 mph, always get 70 mpg, so it’s cost £10 to get here. Around town here and at home always 55 to 60 mpg.
Regards, wonky
March 31, 2025 at 11:12 am #300338thanks all, i think i definateley need to start sit testing to see what i can actually get in and out of etc.
i know for sure the countryman, juke and other nissans work. the new kona apparently is a bit bigger than the old one which was just a tad uncomfortable gettin in and out. then the yaris cross and the niro. otherwise its back to petrol and try to find something i dont have to drive like a granny to get 40 mpg.
the xc40 i like everything except the mpg lol.
March 31, 2025 at 12:23 pm #300339Depending on where you live the XC40 might work. I live in the country and so mainly drive on roads with a minimum 40mph limit and I’m getting high 30s to low 40s mpg, much better than my previous BMW X1. On one trip where the husband was driving we even managed a startling 50.1 mpg – not quite sure how, maybe he’s right about my heavy right foot!
March 31, 2025 at 3:14 pm #300344lol @Ruby2002 i have a similar issue at times with my right foot. nut the juke hybrid is averaging 56mpg over the last 12 months. so its got to be considered if i am going to lose 10mpg. it had better be a comfy, fun car.
March 31, 2025 at 5:20 pm #300356I have a Nissan following a Tiguan and 5 xc Volvos ,all diesel, not a 40 however, all great cars, so it is well worth trying the XC40?
According to the dictionary, a hybrid is something having or produced by a combination or two or more distinct elements , which in this case is a combination of an ICE and an electric motor with a battery , either charged by the ICE or by Plug in, with both the electric motor and the ICE driving the wheels via an auto transmission I believe?
My ePower Qashqai has a different setup, in that there is only an electric motor driving the wheels just like any other EV, but the battery is charged by an ICE which is not connected to, and does not drive the wheels. There is no gearbox as we know it.
However, it still falls under the definition of ‘hybrid’, i guess , because the drive is produced by two elements ie petrol and battery power?
I average around 56 mpg, on a long run, and around 49-52 in town, with a smooth all electric drive, instant acceleration (very quick ) mostly in silence..
March 31, 2025 at 5:31 pm #300357hi @mike 700, the quashqai is on my list although a touch large for my needs i am on my own and as yet dont need to load scooters or whatever hence why i went for the juke last time.the qq @ £546 for the n-connecta is cheaper than the juke hybrid and the x-trail 1.5 e-power 4orce acenta premim is near the top of my ap @ £1146 wpms and the x-trail e-power n-connecta is right p there just below bancruptcy lol.£1646. wether either of those will reduce tommorrow or between now and may 26 we will have to see.

March 31, 2025 at 9:24 pm #300379have a look at the Renault range of Hybrids. I run the Austral E and get about between 55 to 65mpg depending on types of trips. If the Austral is too large there are other Hybrids in the range and the up front payments are going down according to an other topic on this site
March 31, 2025 at 9:51 pm #300380That’s an amazingly impressive mpg @mitch, not sure the Volvo is fun, although it is fast as it has the B4 engine. Surprisingly it’s a better and quieter drive than the X1. I loved the X1 (held onto it for five years I liked it so much), went for the Volvo (Black Edition) because it was such a good deal and I’m really enjoying it, the heated rear seats if you have passengers and the preconditioning, it was lovely getting into a warm, defrosted car in the winter are a definite plus.
April 1, 2025 at 2:14 pm #300452I had a 48v mild hybrid but when cold and doing mainly very short journeys the hybrid system just didn’t work for most of the journey as they don’t work till the cars warmed up enough.
I had a full hybrid on loan for over a month and it could drive in EV mode alone, but again in the morning it used the Ice virtually until we was almost back home again. Later in the day much better but still for me a BEV was the way to go, as I do many shortish trips of only a few miles.

If only my daily journeys were longer, but they not anymore and when cold, I was getting no more than 24 mpg. In summer more mid to low 30’s it is rather hilly near me with lots of stop start and sitting at forever traffic lights.
