Many moons ago, I ordered a diesel Ford Fiesta 1.8. OMG it was terrible. It didn’t even have power steering. I had to end that contract early. I ordered a VW Golf diesel and what a difference. It was like a rocket ship by comparison and yet so much cheaper to run.
Both cars were manual with full hand controls, it was akin to knitting at times!!
Easily the worst car I have ever had.

I remember buying a DAF variomatic in the late 1970’s for what i thought was a very reasonable£60 pounds from a guy that promised me it was ‘a brilliant little car, one lady owner too”
Not a chance! the thing only just got me home (a 15 mile journey) and i never managed to get it to start again. My next purchase was a semi automatic Citroen Pallas but the less said about that the better.
February 7, 2022 at 6:32 am #176380I remember those little DAFs! The gearbox always playing catch up with reality, right?

February 7, 2022 at 8:07 am #176400Ford Escort Mk6, 1.6 ZETEC CVT Ghia Estate.
Owned from new, first visit to the Garage after 6 weeks, total ownership of three years, 3 months of which in total it spent at the mechanics with fun stuff like the CVT not working anymore, misfires, running on three cylinders, trim falling off, third brake light not working etc.
Absolute worst car i’ve ever sat in and burned me to the point where i, to this day, wouldn’t touch a ford with a 10 foot pole anymore. In the end, we had a 3 year old write off without ever having an accident.

SteadyhorseI owned a DAF 33 in the early seventies. A quirky car to say the least but it got me from A to B.
February 7, 2022 at 8:24 am #176404Without doubt a Chrysler Alpine. I needed to raise cash to move house, so I sold my BMW 320 to a work colleague and bought the Alpine off my brother-in-law. I ran it for two years. It was truly horrible.
February 7, 2022 at 8:26 am #176405Nissan Stanza as a company car in the late 80s. Utterly gutless – couldn’t manage 70mph up a slight slope out of town on the M20. Uncomfortable, unreliable, horrible looks.

2019 Ford Kuga Vignale 1.5 auto AWD. (Ext lease)February 7, 2022 at 8:27 am #176406Thankfully I’ve never had a real dog of a car, either as a private or company car, but I’ve driven some bad ones. The worst 2 cars I’ve driven in recent years were a Vauxhall Mokka and MG ZS or HS (can’t recall which it was). Both were hire cars that I had for a number of days each when our previous VW Tiguan was in the garage to have faults rectified. The Mokka was the worst of the two. The most underpowered car I’ve driven, uncomfortable and a poor ride. The MG was better, but the in car tech was two generations out of date and the car just felt cheap and nasty.
I’ve driven one or two poor cars that weren’t exactly cheap. Around 10 years ago I had Mitsubishi Shogun for a week. Dreadful car. Underpowered (in spite of 3.6 litre engine) and drank like a fish. Appalling in car technology and controls.

Djw38ukI’ve had some rotters over the years. In my 20s I had a number of £100 cars that I ran until scrapping. This included an Alfa Sud with a massive hole in the passenger footwell, a brown Austin Maxi, a purple Mini Metro and a Vauxhall Viva.
The “winner” though is probably the Viva, just for the lack of comfort and fact it was so lacking in any form of power.
I did also run a Vauxhall Senator 3L during this period as well so it wasn’t all bad. That was some car and so fast in a straight line!
February 7, 2022 at 8:47 am #176410Back when Opel made proper cars, like the Omega. Or even better, before that, with the Admiral, Kapitän and Diplomat.
The Diplomat V8 Coupe is a gorgeous car even by todays standards.

Got it for little money because the rubber turbo pipe had split and it was making a racket. Seller just wanted rid of it. Supremely comfortable and quiet load lugger. And MrsW could reverse park it better than me!

I always fancied a 3.0 Senator but never got one. I had a Rover 827 Vitesse and Ford Scorpio Cosworth instead. I wish that they still made the latter, even though it would never appear on Motability ?

What about the Opel Monza GSE? That was a nice car, heavy and yet powerful with its 6 cylinder engine. My father had one in gun metal grey and my brother had one in maroon and one in white though none of those were the 24 valve versions. My brother still has an Opel Manta MK1.
Humanity is only humanity when all are treated the same regardless of their skin tone, religious beliefs and geography!

ReneI love old Opels, including the Monza (and the Commodore), as well as the Manta. Though the Manta, at least in germany, has quite a few stereotypes attached to it (fox tail, peeing in your boots, mullet, dumb blonde on the passenger seat etc). Most “old” stuff from Opel is lovely, made like they meant it.
To me, that probably stopped somewhere around/after the Calibra (which i do like too).
If i had too much disposable income, i’d go hunting for a Kadett B Coupe.

Colinvauxhall cavalier 1.6 so underpowered it struggled on the slightest incline.
February 7, 2022 at 1:01 pm #176455
volkswinWas going to say the same had a 1991 1.6 absolutley terrible car, underpowered and over geared.
A few years later I was given a 2.0auto cavalier to run for a few weeks it was like chalk and cheese, the 2.0 auto was a really nice car in comparison.

JojoeRover Metro auto 1990 on Motability. Pile of c**p. Windscreen leaked from the start, Electric windows stopped working after 6 months, central locking broke after 12 months, head lining came away and sagged after 14 months and the iceing on the cake, the auto gear box failed and needed replacing. Buy British, my arse!
February 7, 2022 at 4:00 pm #176478Mk2 Qashqai (2014) 1.5 diesel manual, awful mpg, terrible sound system, dangerous to pull out into traffic with the engine either dying or loosing power.
Any Vauxhall Mokka, had a few on loan while my Kuga was being “repaired” after a massive hail storm, absolutely horrible car, fidgety driving in a straight line at anything over 30mph, lower power ones (even the diesel) could barely get up the small bank leading to my house, had to drop to 2nd. Other cars would climb it left in 5th or 6th doing 30.
Range Rover Evoque, has this for over 2 weeks as a loan car, awful!, appaling visibility to the rear and both rear sides, no head room (head was touching the roof with the seat right down).
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!
February 8, 2022 at 3:32 pm #176639No true dogs, even liked the MG Maestro I had for a couple of years…Had a 3.0 Carlton for a good few years (was looking for a Senator, lucky me – seller had a wife who kept reversing it into things as it was too big, so he let it go cheap) A cracking car- comfort and speed.
Worst for breakdowns/costs was a 2004 Vauxhall Vectra 1.9CDTi, bought as ex Vauxhall management car (probably a hire car) with 10k on the clock, ran it up to 128,000 over 4 years by which point it had had so much work it was like triggers broom. Kept breaking coil springs every few months till I replaced them with aftermarket Bilsteins – never did it again. Put me off Vauxhalls – not had one since.
Work had Mokkas as pool cars for a while (now its BMW i3’s and 3 Toyota Mirai’s) Awful things, plasticky, gutless, woeful and shoddy.
In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.
February 8, 2022 at 3:49 pm #176642Interesting that of the relatively small number of us to respond, aside from the cars from yesteryear, three of us have mentioned the Vauxhall Mokka as being truly dreadful. I often say that they don’t make really bad cars anymore, but maybe I was wrong!
February 8, 2022 at 4:58 pm #176658
volkswinIt would seem there’s a theme going on with Vauxhall seem to mentioned in more than half the replies, have had two brand new vuaxhalls in recent years a Antarra 2.2 which was ok apart from a stupid DPF regen system that ruined its drivability and MPG that I got rid and took a massive hit and the wife had a brand new Agila basically a Suzuki splash in drag did everything a small car should but was so dull to drive and had few toys in it even though it was the top end SE model at the time.
February 8, 2022 at 5:37 pm #176666someone i know leased from motability a mokka a few years ago and sent it back as he said it was worst car he’d ever had, and he was originally in motor trade as a mechanic
