Absolutely bonkers IMO but many do it, but why. I just can’t get my head around why anyone would go to the bother of giving an inanimate object a name.
Maybe I’m thinking too much about this as it’s probably just a bit of fun but I just don’t get it.
Please enlighten me ?

SueIt’s just a fun thing to do….it’s all tongue in cheek.
I’ve had a Peggy, a Priscilla (which became Psycho) and currently have Rocky. I suppose for us, it’s easier than saying “No, not that Peugeot, THAT one”
Back when I was changing manufacturer and model pretty much every time, it was less needed, although we still have some issues over Astras, so we have original Astra and Ebay Astra to differentiate between the two.

GeorgieI haven’t gone so far as to name any of my cars yet, but I used to speak encouragingly to both my Astra GTCs when e.g. they wanted to stall pulling onto a roundabout or started to ‘run out of puff’ going up a hill. (And Yes, I know those problems were really down to me being in the wrong gear) I’d also pat the dashboard when I thought they’d done particularly well. Those cars had their own ‘personality’ – the first (black diesel) was a steady puller, while the second (green petrol) was often rather frisky.
Don’t have that faux ’empathy’ with my current Golf GT, though. It’s . . . a perfectly good car, but it’s just a car.
August 12, 2021 at 5:28 pm #161570I haven’t named any of my scheme cars and won’t, but both my Landrovers are named, the 63 series 2a is Ade from it’s number plate and the 98 Defender 90 is named Joe (Joe 90 which was one of my favourite tv programs when I was a kid)
Why. Every time I said to the missis I was going out in the landy she would ask which one.

nicknames are just fun, tongue in cheek for me, back in my younger more sociable days I can think of a few nicknames from girls that have been bestowed upon a certain inanimate ( now obsolete ) object ?

72 dudesI’ve never named my cars, but my dad did when my sister and I were young. The fact that I still remember them must mean something.
Before I was born there was Phoebe, a 1955 MK1 Ford Zephyr (659 FBE).
When I was born there was Jane, a MK2 Ford Consul. Next was Sadie, a 1965 Ford Corsair.
Minky was that one’s replacement, a 1967 Corsair
In 1970 my dad went all European and bought a Renault 16 which my sister named François!
Then in 1974 he got a MK3 Cortina XL called Sevvy (SEV418M).
So to answer Brydo’s question, maybe it’s about memories, especially from our younger days.
August 12, 2021 at 7:01 pm #161588“why anyone would go to the bother of giving an inanimate object a name.” Well, Brydo, there are quite a few “inanimate object” vessels out there from dinghies to aircraft carriers which are blessed with names. Similarly, railway loco’s.
Nissan used to save us the trouble of thinking up a name with models called Sylvia, Laurel and a few more

AnonymousWell, we are people. We like to name things by names or nicknames. I think this is a part of our nature, heh 🙂
A couple of years ago, in Toronto, my father bought Land Rover from another person. And when he was buying the car — the trader assured him that everything should be alright with it. However, the truth was more illusionable, unfortunately…
Speed gearbox, bracket pivot bolt and even window lifters on backseat were broken. I and my father drove to the service centers once a week because always something broke. And nobody could find a reason “why?”
In one of our “trips” to the Westminster Motors service center, which finally found problems we had –> helped to fix our car. And one of their service managers called our land rover a “behemoth”, because of its overall size and grey exterior view. And this nickname stayed with our car until we did not finally sell it.
I think that my father regretted very much buying this “behemoth” because of all the physical and moral and financial powers we put in it…
