The 55 inch is £449 with 5 year warranty
March 7, 2023 at 10:10 pm #214269Hi all. A newbee here. This thread has tempted me to dip my toe in to the forum for the first time as our 5 year old (just out of warrantee) LG is on the way out. Loss of some colours on parts of the screen. Being blind myself screen size and picture quality are of little interest but I’ll have the roth of ‘er indoors to deal with if I make a bad choice so these 27 pages have made for perfect research. We’re limited to a max size of 48 inches, though 43 preferred because the TV needs to sit on a bit of furniture in an alcove in the corner of the room. She isn’t interested in changing that arrangement. For the same furniture limitation reason we ideally need a centre stand model rather than wide legs. Max budget is £500 although not going to the top of that is my personal preference. That matches perfectly all of the discussion that has gone before and which has led to the conclusion that a Hisense 43A7H or A7G would be a perfect match. A7 rather than E7 because A range has the centre mounted stand if I’ve understood correctly. I’ve ruled out the 43A7G on the grounds that it isn’t widely available and where it can be found it costs more than the A7H. For example it is £549 at Argos. Frustratingly though the E7H seems to be cheaper than the A7H. The 4357H can be had at Costco for £319 with a 5 year guarantee. SO I’m thinking that the 43E7H and buy a separate stand for around £25 is the way to go, unless that is I can persuade her to go up to 55 inch because £369 for the 55A7H looks a bargain. Unless that is anyone can suggest anything different? @kezo you seem to be the expert, what do you think? ‘er indoors seems keen on a Samsung, the UE43BU8510 (£449), but is that just brand snobbery – no Freeview Play, no Dolby, poor sound, though possibly that’s not unique to Samsung, or even the Sony KD43X72KPU. As someone who can’t see the screen it’s easy for me to question if the extra money is worthwhile. Thanks in anticipation for any suggestins – and sorry to revive things just as it looked to be coming to a conclusion.

Firstly welcome to what maybe a never ending thread 🙂
I will try and answer part of your question now and the rest tomorrow.
Unfortunately you would find it difficult to find a 48 inch LED TV, which means 50 inch would be the closest. I always try to recommend going larger (see graph on previous page) with a 20 degree field of view a minimum but I wouldn’t if you don’t want to change the layout thats fine.
Your mention of 55 inch will be alot bigger than the 48″ you mentioned. However a 50 inch will only be roughly an inch 1/4 length ways either side than than sy a 48 inch would and your wife will probably thank you for it in the long run. It may seem a little big to start with but, your wife would soon get use to it especially whe she starts watching the sops, you won’t hear a peep from her lol.
The E7H and A7H are basically the same TV with different legs and are 2022 models. The A7g is a 2021 model and the reason you may struggle to find certain size, although basically the same TV.
Yes you could get a Vessa – stand mount of the right size. We can look at that later.
The Samsung BU510 is a crytal UHD 4k (UHD) display and not a QLED 4k (UHD) (quantum dot) A QLED TV will get around a billion colors for a more clarity and vibrant picture. Therefore at the bare minimum I would at least go for the Q60B / Q65B as they are QLED with a Samsung as they are a better choice. The Q60A from 2021 was a better although hard to find and expensive. As you say Samsung does noy support Dolby Vision but has HDR10+, which isn’t as widely supported as Dolby Vision is. Although this is only important if your wife watches movies anf if the movie supports either format. Freeview play is also lacking as you say, some have youview, but soon fixed with a cheap freeview box. The samsung gets a little brighter than the Hisense. In my oppinion the Hisense has a better picture.
Other than thay you aren’t going to get perfect with no flaws at this price point but, you would be would be able to get a perfectly watchable picture.
Do you watch through an aerial or have Sky/virgin
As an example at Costco the Samsung Q65B 43″ is £429 and the 50″ £529. The Hisense E7H 43″ £319 and 50″ £349. The benifit of costco is you can send it back within 90 days if you don’t like.
Samsung normal TV
Hisense.
I think measure the alcove and then decide. If you want the measurements let me know and I will provide tomorrow. There possibly a couple of other sets towards the max or just over of your budget but I think the most important thing at this point is decide on the size. As a guide you could ask your wife to look at the graph a page or 2 back on the 20 degree line and compare size to distance you sit from TV but make your own decision 🙂

Hi Mike I don’t know where @wmcforum got it from but he went for the A7 and I guess he could fill the 5 year warrant form out anyway.

Yes I will probably go Hybrid next time but, would need larger than the Yaris, possibly the qahqui or x trail e power versions.

March 8, 2023 at 9:51 am #214300March 8, 2023 at 10:36 am #214324@Kezo have you seen the tech giant video from 2 years ago with tip to make his Qled look like his Oled ? He puts Qled in natural in the picture setting etc has them both set up in his lounge
March 8, 2023 at 12:35 pm #214350tip to make his Qled look like his Oled
Firstly ask yourself why he is only demonstrating a game and a low resultion one at that and not a movie or TV show?
The Samsung was a flagship in 2020 and has full array local dimming zones. It only has a little over 100 of these dimming zones in say a block of 12×12 LED’s in each zone that can be individually controlled. This allows each zone to beable to set different brightness levels in different areas of an image. By the nature of an LCD panel the native contrast ratio can only hit 4000:1 because dimming zone can only be dimmed and never off.
On the other hand an OLED has no backlight and each and every pixel, 8,294,400 to be precice will not only beable to set different brightness levels but importantly also beable to turn them off each and every one of them off. By doing so the native contrast ratio becomes infinity. Another inherent problem of LED is blooming that can look like an halo effect around a bright scene due to their ability to only dim and not turn off LEDs (some are worse than others)
You can adjust the settings all day long to replicate the OLED look on a particular scene, but doing that you can details and worst of all you can make other scenes look horrible. The other thing to mention is hardware limitations will never be fully overcome by adusting the software by that I mean settings. It might give you a pleasing look of an OLED in one scene but will likely ruin other scenes.
A basic global dimming QLED won’t have and dimming zones and by its nature will never get close. On the other hand a mini LED with full array local dimming will get closer and be eye watering brighter. The latest quabtum OLEDs will also get eye watering bright and match the mini LED but also retain the quality of OLED because it uses an OLED panel to start with.
The later Samsung Qn90B is mini LED with 240 full array local dimming zones As does the TCL C835 which may have slightly more. The Samsung Q90B 50″ is on offer for £750 with various codes supplied by Samsung. It won’t get much if any lower in price and are decent TV’s.

Its no different than saying if you tweaked your car and put a stage 1 performance tune on it your car would be as quick as one with 200bhp.
I watched a similar video by your favourite Dan when trying to find a video for you. Anyhow he had an LG G2 evo set it up missing most setting and said “its not very bright is it” No because the OLED pixel brightness was turned right down and I’m shouting why miss the basic setup. Considering he says he’s a TV installer he should be ashamed! Never the less they are OKish to watch if you don’t know and want to see HD channels.
I was considering the TCL C835 for the kitchen as cheaper than the C2, but wife not keen on TV’s in every room and need to sweet talk her lol
Where are you on the TV front currently and your thoughts?
March 8, 2023 at 1:49 pm #214371Kezo that 43 inch Samsung Qled 60b at Costco £425 would it be a lot better picture than mine ? That’s my thought at the moment

March 8, 2023 at 2:56 pm #214391Kezo that 43 inch Samsung Qled 60b at Costco £425 would it be a lot better picture than mine ? That’s my thought at the moment
Samsung TV’s since 2016 no longer have freeview let alone freeview play which allows you to rewind pause TV or scroll back a few days. They also miss-out on Dolby Vision whitch is far more widely supportd than HD10+ which is benificial when watching your nature or movies. Thats a big negative considering 99% of other manufacturers do especially if you haven’t got sky or virgin.
Asides that it only has 4k lite picture processor seen on it non QLED sets, it also gets a basic version of the motion processor.
The looks its best in mainly bright scenes and drab in anything that isn’t brite. It known to have motion blur problems mainly down to the basic hardware. There is no AI technolodgy to help with this.
I stand by my word you would have a far more pleasurable viewing experience going to 48 or 50 inch.
As @wigwam is getting at – what has changed your mind on OLED?
March 8, 2023 at 3:03 pm #214393You want an OLED , Mike. Don’t weaken. Feel the force…

If only. I do recall her mentioning something about a ‘waste of money’ and ‘I want to book a holiday’ – could turn out to be the most expensive telly in history.
