What is a “marquee” car brand and how do you identify one?

I see the term used regularly and I’m sure we’ve all heard it being used over the years but which brands actually are “marquee”?

I would suggest the like of Mercedes, BMW and the like have certain cars that would qualify for this accolade but not all.

Rolls Royce would certainly qualify but I wouldn’t initially put Tesla in this elite grouping.

So is it just subjective or are there boxes to be ticked before you can be considered?

it used to be a car company associated with racing in the early mid 20th c..marques like jaguar, auto union, alfa etc. but i guess rolls and bentley too. Racing now is different and maybe marque is too, so i suppose it may be the car makes most lusted after.

Marque means brand/make. The main difference, and the reason “marque” is used today is the same reason as to why some companies call their liquids “vin de table”, and others “wine”.

Same with “dining alfresco”. It’s the posh term for “eating in the garden”.

That’s the reason why “marque” is connected to “posh” cars. Because it’s less pedestrian than “make” – it sounds more “exquisit”. It also requires a certain degree of history/pedigree. Tesla very certainly isn’t “marque”, it doesn’t have the heritage for it.

And yes, Mercedes is considered “marque”. Marque in particular refers to the three pointed star badge, not a specific model (marque is french for brand).

You can observe something similar in higher spec restaurants, where “sous vide” (sounds posh) just means “cooked in vacuum”. Or even more basic: “cuisine” instead of “style”, etc. You get the picture. Every car is “marque”, but only toffs advertise their cars as such. Technically, it applies to every (mainstream) manufacturer.

And I thought Brydo was asking about tents. Cars in tents?

They’re re-releasing it with a 75bhp electric motor, if i’ve read that correctly some time ago. Quite terrifying idea, considering that it looks like it’s made out of bubblegum and milk bottle tops.

According to Autocar, the Moke was revised and relaunched last year with a “new” 66bhp four-pot lump plus new suspension, brakes and stuff. Limited edition production run with less than 60 cars made for UK.

Someone should take one down to The Village…
