      Hi All,

i was hoping someone could help me with a query i have. Last year in September i ordered a Tiguan R-Line, i remember speaking to the sales person about the reversing camera. I cant remember of he said it was standard in all of the models. I am not sure why i believe this to be the case.

unfortunately i have misplaced my order documents all i have is the AP which i remember was £3999. The engine i selected was the 2.0 litre with 4wd.

i have looked at the current spec sheets and the reversing camera is an additional £380.

      my questions are the following:

does anyone know the base cost for the 2.0l tiguan r-line last september?

if the camera was not selected and it is not the case that this was being included as a standard feature then can i still get this added considering i now have a build date for the middle of october?

i have asked the dealer but not had a response as of yet.

      thanks

The R-Line does not have the reversing camera as standard, only the Elegance does. That’s the case since the Mk2.5 facelift.

Once you have a build date, you can’t amend the order anymore. Even prior to a fixed build date, if you amended the order, it would reset your place in the queue – delaying the build, so that wouldn’t have been advisable either.

I doubt the dealer said that all Tiguans come with reverse camera, since it’s patently not true (unless it’s a really crooked one) for this model of Tiguan. Only the Elegance has it as standard, as well as the hot one (“R”, not “R-Line”). The rest only get beepers.

          Thanks,

hopefully i have added it as an option. Its a shame i cant find the paperwork that was given to me with the order.

I know i would not have ordered a car without a reverse camera so hopefully i added it as an option.

I don’t like being the bearer of bad news, but £3999 was the base AP of the R-Line. With Camera it would’ve been £4379.

We had to pay extra for it in our Golf GTE too, which is frankly ridiculous.

              Thank you for confirming.

It will be interesting to see what the sales person says as i know i would have stated that the camera was a must.

He was all to eager to upsell me to the 2.0 litre engine so its surprising he missed this. I am certain we discussed the rear view camera and he gave me assurances that it was included.

If you’d have ordered in or before June 2020, he could explain it away – that’s when the facelift happened, including removal of the reverse camera as standard on the R-Line. Could’ve been an honest mistake at that point in time. A year after the facelift however, if he indeed falsely advertised an option on the car, i’d certainly try to get some form of compensation, or walk.

There’s potentially the option of adding it after it’s being built (retrofitted), but that’s going to be considerably more expensive. If you can somehow prove/convince them that they falsely advertised the camera, they might cover the cost (or at least half of it).

This, or walking, are your only real options. The car’s removed from the scheme, so there’s no re-ordering it.

As some sort of consolation I was saying to someone in a Tiguan user forum that I’d wished I’d added the rear camera to my order and that person had just taken delivery of a new Tiguan R-Line with the optional camera and he said he’d wished he hadn’t bother as its the worst camera he’s seen in a car.

I don’t know how much truth is in it but there is talk that VW have been using whatever parts they can get there hands on because of chip shortages and the camera is sub-standard to there usual standards.

They tell me as my car hasn’t been built yet I could still add the camera to my order but don’t want to risk being knocked down the queue a few more months after waiting 11 months with god knows how many months still to go.

                    Thanks,

Hopefully the rest of the tech such as safety features is not using sub par parts or we may have lots of recalls.

My car us due for build on week 42. It has been a full year since i placed my order.

I had the SEAT version of the Tiguan Allspace the camera was quite good in terms of resolution and clarity.  However, one of the annoying faults on mine was that after a few seconds of reversing the screen would blank itself for a few more seconds and then go back to normal.

It had a self cleaning function when you used the rear wiper which was quite clever. Not sure this is the same system as the Tiguan.

When I had an older Leon, several dealers indicated that you cannot retro fit a camera because the head unit is different and the utilise a different wiring loom. At the time I found it hard to believe but had no way of easily checking.

To me it made no sense having different head/display units and a different wiring loom.  Even the £380 does seem and excuse my VAG to charge customers a significant amount for something that should be a standard feature these days especially in terms of safety

Hi steve, yes it’s accepted the camera on the Tiguan was of good quality and hopefully the person reporting the naff camera just happened to get one that has a problem that the dealer should fix.

It’s the only one reported but if other reports start popping up over the next few months we will know for sure.

Hi Sam, I can’t imagine that VW would be stupid enough to use sub-standard equipment in safety features but I recall one manufacture, Honda or Toyota I think, that had knock off air bags fitted and had to recall all their cars but I think the bigger problem for all manufactures at the moment is the stop, start, stop, start production going on because of lack of parts.

I would assume they don’t make a car until they have all the parts to finish it but we hear stories of cars being parked up in a field waiting for a chip to finish it off and I can’t help feeling that some of those cars will have problems in future in what we used to call “a Friday car”.

I still wished I had ordered the camera but the R-Line does have the sonic radar stuff that I loved in my VW Golf and it also has “cross traffic” something I’ve not had before but if it works the way I think it does should be something else to help with reversing.
