MPs start road pricing debate ahead of 2020 inquiry; tolls, congestion charging and workplace parking levies all under consideration
UK motorists could be faced with pay-per-mile road charging and other fresh levies to plug a £40 billion financial black hole caused by the mass advent of electric cars, which are currently exempt from road tax and generate no fuel duty revenue.

The news comes after the cross-party Transport Select Committee announced it was starting a “national debate” on road pricing, with a formal inquiry beginning in 2020.

The Committee highlights that “road pricing does not only mean tolls”, with congestion and low emission zones being other possibilities, along with extra fees for heavy goods vehicles, and workplace parking levies.

I think I pay enough without being charged per mile Thank you very much. If the black hole is due to the mass event of electric cars, then looks like electric car owners will have to have deep pockets to make up the 40 Billion short fall.

It’s soon going to be a luxury to be able to drive on our roads. for those that can afford too.

If they built toll roads like the French I would gladly pay to avoid congestion, but I can see our lot taking a half hearted solution with short stretches of tolls to bypass congested areas like the M6 toll.

OT It must infuriate the road builders when a couple of days after opening a new road a lorry drives along with a broken bit hanging off the back proceeds to carve a line down the middle of said new road. Who pays for that repair?

Well surely the answer is to take a retrograde step and rename ved back to Road Tax, then electric cars can pay as well. Oh, and they go back to using the revenue to actually provide and maintain the roads as well!

The fact of the matter is that, while EV and low emission cars enjoy no or low cost road tax, it should be enjoyed while it lasts. When we eventually do go fully electric, whenever that be, of course these vehicles will need to pay a road tax, whatever it’s called. There will be an overlap so both EV and petrol/diesel will pay at the same time. It’s just a matter of when and this article just confirms what I’ve thought as common sense for a number of years.

? I will be remembered for nothing but had great fun doing it ?

Surely the way to go and they can call it VED for ice cars and EVED for electric, simples!

Suits me if they get rid of VED and charge per mile – I have two cars that do less than 2000 miles a year between them and would cost me £400 VED if I kept them taxed all year. Let’s say 2p a mile for all cars.
