I visited my local Nissan dealer this morning mainly to get the feel of the Qashqai, checking if I could get in and out without banging my head every time I did so. As the Qashqai is taller than my Corolla TS I asked how long I could have for the test drive as I wanted to check the Qashqai would go into my garage without too many problems.
I was quite surprised to hear the Motability salesman say I wasn’t allowed an unaccompanied test drive and that he would have to be with me at all times. Never had this before from any make or dealership. In fact when I changed to Toyota three years ago, the salesman there said get the feel of the car, take it for an hour or so and before the Toyota, Vauxhall even let me have a car for three days.
Not sure if the rules have changed or what other dealerships offer but this put me off a little as I wouldn’t change to a model I hadn’t had a decent test drive in.

I’ve recently tested the Enyaq (a few hours) and Ioniq 5 (half a day) both unaccompanied so this is dealer specific.
February 15, 2024 at 12:30 pm #258452Yeah, I’d say this is this particular dealer being a nightmare. In the last 2 months I’ve test driven the Q4, Enyaq, Ioniq 5 and 6 and Mustang and had the car to myself for a minimum of an hour and several ‘take as long as you need’ and one ‘we close at 6, if you need that long’ at 10am.
I would either be looking at a different Nissan dealership or a different car.

February 15, 2024 at 12:39 pm #258455I always get a test drive for at least a few hours. You can’t tell if the car is suitable in 15 minute
I’m about to take a Kia EV6 out for the afternoon.
My Nissan dealer is letting me have a car for the whole day
I will try another dealer if I was you
February 15, 2024 at 12:46 pm #258456I don’t want a salesman next to me smelling of cheap lynx spray I’d prefer on my own but having booked the Honda ZRV for an hour on my own on the phone he got in and we were out 15 mins !

You’ve obviously been to my dealership Mike.

February 15, 2024 at 1:48 pm #258462When looking at the Citroen wifey and I did a joint 20 minute accompanied test drive to get an initial feeling and then after positive first impressions said we’d need a longer test to make sure. No problem, arranged a day and went for lunch and everything.
February 15, 2024 at 2:07 pm #258464I had a couple of two hour test drives by myself in X Trail at my Nissan dealership. One was during busy time of day to see how i felt in traffic. Other was as it was turning dark so i could check i was happy with lights and moving car in dark. Aslo second drive wass lucky that it was exact same spec as i have ordered.

Wanted to make sure we could get it in our park at the back of the house, so he told us take it home and try, obviously it was okay and should get it middle of March ?. Volvo were the same, maybe try somewhere else?

February 15, 2024 at 3:36 pm #258471We had an initial hour with theBZ4X then another couple of hours to make sure both times on our own
From April 2024 Toyota BZ4X now From april 2025 Skoda Enyaq 85 Edition due to BZ4x being written off
February 15, 2024 at 4:23 pm #258478Have never asked for a test drive, can’t see the point. Can test access and comfort etc in the showroom, a car is a car these days they all drive much the same especially on today’s roads it’s pretty much crawling through too much traffic.
If I seem a little strange, that's because I am.

February 15, 2024 at 11:19 pm #258548I had 2 test drives in Qashqai. 1 with the dealer, the other with my brother. We were just signed off with insurance form and off we went. Returned about 3 hours later.
Volvo was very disintersted, SEAT were lacklustre, even though I’d originally ordered, then cancelled.
I had booked and confirmed with Kia but I was ill so I couldn’t get there – tumbleweed in response from them. Not a whisper as a no show.
Nissan dealer was really good, keeping me up to date with everything. Car, Qashqai Epower, expected at the end of March.

Bulls!t they do. My local Skoda garage took a photocopy of my licence and gave me the keys. 75 minutes later we gave them back the keys.
Phone around, see if there’s someone within a reasonable distance willing to give you a decent test drive.

February 20, 2024 at 10:41 pm #258953Dealerships are individual businesses and they set which criteria for tests drives,
some will require to be accompanied by an employee due to insurance purposes, other may just decide that’s how they operate, some will be more flexible
if you don’t like the test drive conditions offered simply visit another dealer, we all have a choice
February 20, 2024 at 10:44 pm #258955the garage is

Skoda has adopted a direct agency sales model for its electric cars. Dealerships act only as an agent with the Enyak.
Direct Line Motability allow upto 24hrs extended test drives, which is covered by your Motability insurance and not the dealers. However the dealer needs to organise this with DLM.

Initially had the CX60 for 2hrs and went back on the Friday morning and kept it 24hrs. Shane the seats weren’t suitable.
The sales guy also said it use to be 48hrs with RSAM.
February 26, 2024 at 10:50 am #259457By way of an update, I called in at my local Renault dealership today to check the new Austral out, generally checking how easy it was getting in and out. As everything seemed OK, I dropped the big question “do you do unaccompanied” test drives? Yes sir, no problem, how long would you like the car for?
Completely different to my experience with the local Nissan dealership.

February 26, 2024 at 11:35 am #259459Never had an issue, apart from one Nissan garage a few years ago.

Not sure yet, it still hasn’t hit me that it was so easy. Way different to my Nissan experience.
