30% is an excellent figure. In the older days they used to say you loose 10% just driving a new car off the forecourt.
The 10-15% figure is much the same today. In the first year loss can be with in 15-40% and upto 60% over 3yrs. Obviously this is dependant on the vehicle and manufacturer.
I would be very interested in what Motability paid for their vehicles.
October 3, 2023 at 10:32 am #236137Just to make things more complicated……… ‘as a percentage of the retail price.’ Lot’s of car makers end user sale price bears no relation to the list price.
October 3, 2023 at 11:00 am #236144It’s good to take the £750 new car payment into accout too though, which then makes the top spec Megane £245 AP which is a bargain this quarter.
Yes, that’s true, as you only get that if you order a new car, so it’s effectively a discount. I don’t think it’s right to deduct the Good Condition Bonus from the calculation though, as some do, as you get that regardless of whether you stay in the scheme or leave.

As you say, this massively varies by manufacturer. Some brands retain an incredibly high proportion of their value, even at 3 years, whereas others depreciate at a horrendous rate.
As for what Motability pay it would indeed be very interesting to know. It’s still perfectly easy to negotiate quite big discounts as a private individual. 7.5% to 12.5% seems to be the norm, with some cars as high as 20%. Big lease companies probably start at an absolute minimum of 20% and go well above that, especially when manufacturers want to shift models. Any figures that we see on invoices are never the full picture. Then, of course, Motability don’t pay the 20% VAT – and we wonder why the cash surpluses are so high ?

The prices are negotiated not only by model but by trim line. I have some historical figures and it’s a complex process. On the info I have the discounts vary from 16% up to 23%.

If we take a £50k car and use the 23% discount as a minimum based on todays figure’s and then remove the VAT @20% – the £50k vehicle becomes £32,083!
Lets say the AP is £5k plus sacrified benifits (£11076) £15076
15076/32083×100= 47% you are paying to the value of the vehicle at what Mb pay.
Mb then sell it for ?

October 4, 2023 at 8:42 am #236300Good news – I’ve just had confirmation that Marshalls are able to give £500 cash for an i4 on Motability order!
They haven’t guaranted this on my order in August, just saying if it is available at the time of hand over you would get it.
Did order from Adam at Grimsby BMW who has looked after me well. We took his i4 35m sport on a 3 hour drive with my wife. That’s the way dealers should act with customers.

Admittedly 2 years ago, I got my local BMW dealer to match the Marshalls £500 offer, even though they are a completely different group, by saying that I was prepared to travel to a Marshall’s dealership to get the saving. There was no condition that it had to still be in place when the car arrived either, as that would be a bit naughty (as you make the decision to order not knowing 100% when the car will arrive). I got 15% discount off the options as well. Always worth negotiating and being prepared to shop around.
