      Advice required please,.

AS some of you may know I’m in the process of redesigning the Garden, now although at present an allowance for a wheelchair etc is not a requirement I want to make allowances for a slope as well as steps to future proof and make it more accessible not just for ourselves but those that struggle with steps etc.

So idealy I woul like the slope inline with the back door, the issue being we have a retaining wall starting 1100mm from the back door, we are having a digger in to clear it back somewhat but with my present design it would only allow for a 1200mm flat from back door with the slope then rising a total height of 500mm over a 3000mm length. So I’ve marked on the fence 500mm up over 3000mm length and put a string line across but this looks steep to the eye, am I being fussy as any slope is a bonus or is there a limit to which a slope becomes unmanageable.

      thanks in advance.

Humm point Dexter says 500mm over 3000 is a 1:6 gradient which does seem rather steep.

This gleaned from the internet may help:

“Maximum slope for hand-propelled wheelchair ramps should be 1″ of rise to every 12″ of length (4.8 degree angle; 8.3% grade). Maximum slope for power chairs should be 1.5″ rise to 12″ length (7.1 degree angle; 12.5% grade). Minimum width should be 36″ (inside rails) – (48″ is ideal)”

So 1 in 12 for hand propelled or 1 in 8 for powered.

Hmm thanks guys, I’ve rigged up a timber slope this morning (I dread to think what the neibours are thinking) I’ve broke out the wall enough to get the true levels and it’s a bit better I’ve gained 110mm in my favour, so as doing it in block paving will go with that as it can easily be change, if things change in the future then the step out could also be raised and I can then incorporate the steps into the slope. Decision made. For now anyway lol.
