<p style=”text-align: left;”>Quick question as road tax is currently free for battery vehicles can I still use my road tax reduction due to PIP on my other car?</p>
I’m thinking about getting an EV on motability for all the local journeys when it’s just the 4/5 of us. For towing the van or holidays or when kids take friends with them using the Grand Voyager which costs a fortune in road tax otherwise.

If that’s doable it’d be a brilliant solution esp as I’ve had a mileage based insurance quote if £170 per year then pennies per mile

Anyone else come across this yet? Thanks.

My understanding is that as EV have a zero duty charge, so there would be no point in having the mobility tax exemption on it, as it’s free anyway.

You can use the disability vehicle tax exemption for your grand voyager.  This would be allowed under these rules.

If hyou tap the following question into the Motability Q&A bot on the Motability website you get the following:

Q: Can I change the tax class of my Motability vehicle?

A:It is possible to change the tax class of your vehicle once your agreement has gone live; either from disabled to private class, or from private to disabled class. You will need to call us to discuss this further on 0300 456 4566; or if available, use Live Chat to talk to an Advisor now.

Please note that disabled class tax exemption can only be used on one vehicle at a time.

So, it would appear possible to tax your Motability vehicle into another class and use your disabled exemption elsewhere. However you have to contact them about it.

I think if you do this though, you are personally responsible for keeping your Motability vehicle taxed annually (even though it is nil taxation).

Only the person/company/body who the annual tax reminder is sent to is responsible for renewing the tax on a vehicle. Motability have the V5 for their vehicles so it should go to them.

Having said that I would still check to make sure it is done.

I’ve emailed them to ask this as it’s worth over £400. Just if anyone had come across this before as it’ll probably take a fair for them to reply.

Does sound promising, fingers crossed as it’ll all feed in to justifying it to the wife lol.

              Thanks for the feedback.

Yes you can, I am responsible for taxing my Leaf and used my road tax exemption on my saab.

Phone Motability to discuss it. They sent me a copy of the V5 and when the tax reminder came in to them they forwarded that to me. You still have to go online (or to a post office?) and do the paperwork to tax the EV but obviously the cost is £0.00 ? Keep an eye on them though cause one year they just done it themselves so it might cause an issue.

I then taxed my saab convertible which saved £565.00 this year, if it hadn’t been for this i wouldn’t have kept it for so long (7 years) and only sold it last month ?

I’m actually thinking of doing the same, getting a mobility EV and using the tax exemption on a second car for towing  ? win win

Remember the car that is tax exempt can only be used by you or for your benefit.

So if your wife, partner, kids, sibling, neighbour etc uses it they have to be doing so for your benefit… ie going to get your shopping or medication not for them to go to their work or for a day trip.
