Quaint old technology in cars

With my hire car taken back for crash damage repair, I received a 70 plate Hyundai Tucson with 10,000 miles.   It has some quaint old technology the key fob has this metal thing I have to put in a slot and turn on the steering column to make the engine go. Then there is this big handle thing between the seats to stop the car rolling away.

How quaint, haven’t had a car with this for the last 6 years! What ever next a windy thing for the windows ?

Electronic parking brake is a godsend in our car. I always used to put it on so hard, Mrs Joe would ring me to come and release it as she didn’t have the strength.

I’m driving a 2009 Mazda 6 TS at the moment.

I have to turn the lights on manually.

          I often forget 🙂

Has it not have a handle thing below the front radiator for starting the engine.

Not having all the safety features that cobstantly bing or bong or scream at you when it sees a shadow!

I do enjoy driving our vintage agricultural tractors on tractor rallies or going to/from local agricultural shows and ploughing competitions etc.

Yes, it does need a starting handle to start it.

Also, having no indicator lights (or brake lights) arm signals are the order of the day (how many people can remember how to do them)?

With it belching out black smoke from the bonnet mounted exhaust and in wet weather, driving goggles are a must as you are somewhat exposed to the elements with no cab.

All at a maximum of 20mph – great fun. Fortunately for me, it is an automatic gearbox version I drive.

                        Padding is for whimps!

Is it by any chance a Massey Ferguson ?

                            I completely agree. The move to everything being operated by touch screen is a retrograde step IMO. Far more distracting (and therefore dangerous) to use when on the move. I love the BMW iDrive system, with rotary controller, that is far easier to use than a touchscreen and much safer. It’s no wonder that it’s universally regarded as the best infotainment system on the market. I am really disappointed to learn that the all new BMW X1 has lost the rotary controller. A massive step backwards. What Car? clearly agree with me. This from a road test I read the other day;

However, the X1 no longer gets a rotary controller; instead, control is via touch or a reasonably effective (but far from perfect) voice command system. Losing the dial might sound a small change, but it’s enough to turn this from a class-leading system to one that’s fiddly to use when you’re on the move.

No, older than most MF’s (they were just ‘Ferguson’ then). It is a 1957 McCormick International B25.

It is on a couple of youtube videos of tractor rallies in North Yorkshire with me at the wheel. Will try to dig out a couple of photos – or take some when I go over to the barn on the other side of the farm, albeit it isn’t looking at its best at the moment as I am slowly getting it prepped for the start of the local rallying season in April.

bro used to have and use an old fordson tractor. metal seat and all. was a good thing and he had quite a few add ons for it that he used on his small holding. sold it eventually for some jap thing, or was it chinese?  .. anyway although much more modern etc it wasnt as good as the fordson, which of course was free tax etc.

i had an old mk2 land rover. it had a big hoist on front and was lots of fun, but it was agricultural when on rd..

My daughter has a shop in Llandeilo with the number of old tractors passing, we are never sure if it is just daily traffic or a daily tractor run !
