Prioritising retail sales over motability

I’m in a position to order again now.

I’ve done my extensive research and testing – then long list and finally shortlist against my access and needs.

my first choice I test drove 2 weeks ago & was told as a brand new model (Renault Austral)  they’ll be stock available at dealership in July,

      if ordered in June.

And July orders fulfilled in aug / sept.

      after later stating I’m a motsbility customer – to me a customer is a customer & a lease is a lease etc…

I’ve been told via email that the stock that will be available is only for retail sales (even though few preordered or sold) & that any motsbility orders would have to be a new order for a factory build & at least 6 months lead in time.

I questioned their stance, as it was clear that the stick coming in July , aug, sept had a number of unsold units.
they came back and said it was the policy set by the manufacturer, not them as the dealership group.

either way in my personal opinion I think it’s tantamount to discrimination.

whilst I appreciate there is a business / profit rationale, as they’ll make more from a retail sale – many people opt for private leases. etc…, a lease is a lease !!

In my opinion,  if a car is in stock available new / pre Reg / delivery mileage – unallocated / unsold – then it should be offered to any customer wishing to have it be that private cash or lease or indeed motsbility [lease]

what are others experiences of such situations ??

      viewx – please

This come up time and time again on this forum and, whilst frustrating, it’s not discrimination. It’s business.

Dealers make far less money from a Motability sale than they do from a private sale or a private PCP lease (which is effectively still a sale) as they get a set fee rather than a profit margin. The way that they make a Motability sale become far more profitable is by doing a factory order, as the new order also counts towards their volume targets, which generate dealership group and manufacturer bonuses. Cars that are already built have already qualified, so if any of these cars go to Motability customers they get nothing more than the handling fee. Selling to a private customer, even through a PCP lease, will generate many times this amount.

It is perfectly possible for some dealers to allow Motability customers to pick up ‘in stock’ cars, but this will usually be when they are struggling to shift stock, have replacements on order and need to clear stock, or have newer  models due in.

Exactly this. We don’t have to like it – I don’t – but it is a simple fact of business, sadly.

Current: MY24 Renault Austral Iconic FHD.
Ordered 5/2/26: Chery Tiggo 8 'Summit' ICE

          Previous Motability cars:
          2013 Ford Focus estate auto.
2016 Vauxhal Zafira 1.4T SE Auto.
2019 Ford Kuga Vignale 1.5 auto AWD. (Ext lease)

the old renault wont allow it lie, its complete bull and horse S%%T, I have litrally had my last 4 cars from in stock and been in them within 10 days.

Ring round other dealers you will find a good one but may have to travel, also contact them 3 days before the end of the month, if their quota is low I am sure they will help, I bet this dealer is the only renault dealer for miles so they think they can dictate their own rules as they dont have much competition..

There is 100% dealers out there that will be willing to let you have one of the central stock orders, what happens with renault is they ship loads to import centre and the dealers are allowed to order so many from there (each dealer) dealers will want to sell.

You also have to remember were in june now, June July and aug sales are slow due to people more concerned about holidays rather than buying a car.

ring round and be prepared to travel and open on colors I am more than sure you will find a dealer that will let you have one of the july cars.

MB negotiate prices even lower than fleet buyers and thus dealers and manufacturers have an incentive to sell as much as they can to retail and then fleet before fulfilling MB orders.

It isn’t discrimination, it’s just business. If you made any product and one customer was willing to pay you 20% more than the next customer for your product, who would you look after first. Unfortunately for us we are currently in a sellers market.

It would be really interesting if MB did a comparison to what our leases would cost if they paid full retail price.

If I seem a little strange, that's because I am.

Although absolutely nobody pays full retail price for the sort of cars we get on Motability! Even a private individual taking out a PCP has a discount built into the deal, and that’s before they start negotiating!

Given that Motability are one of the biggest fleet buyers in the U.K. and also benefit from full VAT exemption, I should imagine that the average discount achieved against full retail price is probably around 40%.
