Plug Your Computer Into Your Sky Q Box For Internet

I knew my Sky Q box acted like a wifi repeater, boosting the wifi signal in the living room, but I didn’t realise you can plug an Ethernet cable into the box and take a wired internet connection from it. I always thought the Ethernet socket was input only. Who knew!

Me @jojoe I have cat 6 Ethernet cable running all over the house.A Much more secure, and stronger signal than wireless. Have had Ethernet connection for my Sky Q box since it was installed.

@Joss, I knew you could connect it to a router for the Sky smart features. But I didn’t realise it acted like a router. My smart TV has the BT Sport app, but it kept dropping out, I plugged an Ethernet cable from the tv to the Sky Q box and it now works perfectly. I’ve actually got a Cat8.1 cable but it’s too thick and rigid, I’ll change it for a Cat6.

Indeed @jojoe I have the same set up. I have only used cat 7 cable for external run to feed upstairs Ethernet loop, as it is installed in a conduit.

Your Sly q box and or mini boses if tou have them act as part of a MESH wifi netwotk and helps to fill help fill any blackspots in your home. So your Q box in essence is like a mini router and is why your able to take a wired connection from it. However I would have thought this would have needed enabling in the settings.

Ive gone back to VM mainly for the internet now but, I did find the Sky Q and mini boxes took all the wifi bandwidth even though they had cat5e going to them. So this maybe what you were experiencing.

Like @Joss I have ethernet cable running all over the house and for my CCTV, with a mixture of cat 5e and 6. I also have a Netgear gigabit switch behind the TV cabinet.

                @Kezo
, that’s probably why the signal to the TV was dropping. The Sky box is underneath the TV but that never drops out, weird.

I recommend you now swich wifi off on the Sky q box if you have any other devices using wifi.

Its a well lnown problem especiall with the sr203 router.

What you need is a decent router. Where you have full access to every setting. Personally I use the FriTZ!Box 7530. A fabulous router IMHO check it out.

                      Bang on @joss 🙂

I’m using a older NG Nighthawk (DSL) its still superior to any ISP router, but would like to upgrade to one with wifi 6, for when I’m sitting on sofa or in garden.

I need to get a VPN again-let my last one slip (Proton) I’m currntly looking at Private internet access but somewhat concerned there is no security audit! Which one are you using?

I have just the solution for you @Kezo. Introducing the FRITZ!Box 7590AX WiFi 6. Take a Peek Kezo. Incidently I will be purchasing this badboy in the near future.

I think I’m locked in to only using the Sky router. I used to sell powerline adapters, they were very popular, saves running cabling all over the house.

Nah you are not locked as I remember it. I used my own router when with sky. What area are you in @jojoe you could move to a better ISP such as Zen Internet. who supply Fritzbox routers..Zen are my ISP of choice.

@Joss, Zen can supply me, but I get such a good deal from Sky it’s not worth moving. I pay £59 for the full package with sport, movies, UHD, Netflix, 68mb broadband and phone. I let my package expire at the end of the last contract, they even sent me the return box for my Sky Q, then after a few days with no tv I rang them and got the best deal I’ve ever had. I may try another router though.

Isn’t that an ADSL/2 router – I need DSL or can it be used on both?
