We are due to change our car now and have been thinking of a PHEV vehicle. We would like an EV but live in a very rural area so a lot of our journeys are quite long and we don’t want the range worry when we go out, so maybe next time. I realise that motability do not pay for home charging points for PHEV vehicles, so I was wondering if it is actually worth having a charging point fitted. I would appreciate anybody’s experience of running a PHEV vehicle and whether or not we should have a charging point fitted.

Actually motobility do offer a charging point installation. Look on web site and search for electric vehicle charging point. I think it’s a firm called bp go or something like that.

Not 100% sure if motability pay for a BP Chargemaster installation on PHEV’s but to be honest, on a 13amp granny charger, it will only take 4 or 5 hours to charge up anyway.

Re living rural and range, the Kia Soul, Hyundai Kona and ID3 are all pushing the 300 mile range on a full charge, how often do you really need more than that in a day?

A PHEV vehicle is not i believe like an ev and will only do around 30 miles, read this somewhere( not sure check this ) on a full charge so in your case not worth the vost of a home charger better with the id3 etc, free home charge,a must if you live rural, and good range, totally agree with Intrancity

This is from the Outlander page dunno if all PHEVs have fast charging circuitry or not but

                  3-pin plug 6 h
                  3.7kW  4 h
                  7kw 4 h
                  22kW 4 h

                  20%-80%
                  50kW 30 min
                  150kW 30 min

So you could save 2 hours between charges if that’s likely to make a difference between 3 pin plug & 7kW

We’re very rural & coastal & I’m looking at the Kona nearly 300 mile range between charges 0-80% fast charge at 70kW charging on about 50 mins. Still plenty of range for us 30 miles each way to the city for clothes shopping etc. Suppose it depends on your journey length & eV considered.  Good luck with it
