Not always easy to remain upbeat

Had another heart incident yesterday (Sunday) so now back in hospital.

Time now 00:28am (Tuesday) and it’s a challenge to sleep because there’s a snorer in the next bed.

Care by the paramedics, cops, medics, nurses and ancillary staff has been top notch.

Before going off-shift my named nurse suggested i quit smoking adding that the ward can supply nicotine patches. Unfortunately that’s not really a viable option for me because as a smoker for nearly 50yrs quitting now would effectively be impossible for me.

The hospital food is very good and the little Filipino lady that brings the tea’s and coffee’s around at various points during the day is a blast too. She’s forever singing (quietly) classic Mowtown hits from the 60’s + 70’s and as far as i can tell her vocal is really very good.

      Prognosis:

      Quadruple bypass or more stents.

I quickly went with the ‘more stents’ option but the cardiologist prefers option B. Later this morning i’ll go for another angiogram and the results of that will i guess determine which procedure i’ll end up having.

      Ward Life:

I’m a massive supporter of the NHS but i’ve got to say that the hospital i’m in has clearly seen better days.

Peeling paintwork is an issue and many ceiling tiles in poor condition too – some in very poor condition) and i’m in a 6 bed cardiology HDU ward.

Night nurses yapping amongst themselves through the night is surprisingly soothing and sure beats listening to the BBC World Service. I now know Jenny’s husband Peter has been playing around with Tracey. Occupational therapist Megan is now dating junior Doctor Keemish. And the A+E sister (i can’t remember her name) recently suffered a miscarriage. Oh and Charge nurse Paul from the medical ward is thinking about quitting the NHS and the UK for Australia.

All things considered i’m in the right place and i wouldn’t swap the NHS for any other healthcare system in the world.

The only question I have is? Does Jenny know Peter is playing away?

I urge you to try to quit smoking, it will help to extend your life. I did 20 years ago before requiring a few years later 2 stents followed by triple bypass 9 yrs ago.

You are in the best place, take advantage of everything you can. Chin up, positive mental attitude, all the best.

Sorry to hear your in hospital Gee, which can be a challenge in itself. The good thing is your in the right place and I hope your op goes ok.

Now I’m not one to preach but, as an ex smoker who packed in 6yrs ago, I not going to say I feel much better as I have COPD but, my wallet is a damn sight heavier. I tried the patches and tablets without much success. I even tried tiny whistle sweet looking vape given to me by the NHS, that was as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Iwas then recommended a vape mod device, the type you can replace the batteries. I stuck with fag flavour juice as I found the fruit flavours sickly. The taste took some getting use to but I gradually weened myself from 18mg nictotine to 0mg and still use it now. My X rays and scans whilst not looking much better due to COPD, they haven’t got worse!

If you do decide t try one, you need mouth to lung (MTL) setup, which is more akin to smoking and not direct to lung (DTL) that produces more vapour clouds than a fire, they also need a higher wattage and can fry your lungs over time!

            All the best 🙂

2015 I was in the same boat as you @Gee. Take my advice and opt for the bypass. I had a triple bypass and new aortic valve fitted at the same time.

Recovery was not easy as I had severe Kidney failure after the operation. 18 weeks in hospital in a city 38 miles from my home.

I stopped smoking cigs a year before surgury thanks to vaping. @Kezo advice is spot on. I still vape now. But I have to say now in 2023 that I am pleased to still be here.

Good luck to you Gee. You CAN stop smoking, I did it over 20 years ago, it was hard, especially when I was in the pub and everyone else was smoking. My in-laws quit smoking in their sixties. Stay positive and have a go a quitting!

Sorry to hear that Gee, I wont lecture you as you already know which options will help you and I have never experienced any of your problems. I just wish you a quick and steady recovery.
