No car after paying a deposit.

In July I ordered a Toyota Corolla sports tourer, I was told there was a long wait, which I was expecting. The dealer looked at his computer and found a cancellation and said I can have it if I paid a small (£99) deposit. O was told this would be in the dealership mid September. Perfect, as my contract finishes Sept 25th.

After finding out that the car was taken off the scheme at the weekend I decided to pop in and ask if we were still on track for September. After looking at the computer the dealer said no as there was no car allocated to me. I asked him why did I pay the deposit? He kind of shrugged his shoulders and said these things happen.

He then said that the new 2023 model was starting in December, and that I could be one of the first to get it on the scheme. OK I thought. As I knew if I cancelled I would be waiting as long for a different car elsewhere. Then he said the advance payment on the new model will be a lot higher. I think this is wrong, as even though its a new version  its still a Corolla and I should only pay the original AP.

Sadly the dealer sounds clueless as the day you ordered whatever the price was is what you pay

@Brighton Steve Get in touch with motability customer support and run it by them, and see what they say.

If its a new car, not yet officially on the scheme. It may well be difficult to argue for the same AP as the original one. But its worth a shot..

@Brighton Steve – what I think is you should demand your deposit back and walk away.

This dealer is giving you grief. There are other cars and other dealers..

Not sure if it is any help (and what the waiting time is) but the Toyota Corolla sports tourer is still available on the scheme. The Suzuki Swace is a Toyota Corolla sports tourer with a different badge/face. The main difference between the Swace and the Corolla is the Suzuki only comes as an estate (which some say is the best Corolla).

Thank you all for the advice, I will speak to Motability as it is still showing as application approved, and see what they say. Ginny, the swace is available but the AP has gone up a lot in this quarter. I will let you know how I get on.

                    Hi Steve,,

This probably isn’t going to be either the most helpfull or best of advice so sorry in advance.

I don’t know what other opinions are but this is mine and I can only base it on my own meandering experiences.

If the salesman treated me in the same manner as you Steve I’d get my deposit back tell him to bend over and drive his toyota corolla up his own backside! I’m getting really fed up with us motability customers taking a rather distant 2nd place to outright purchasers. Granted dealerships don’t make as much money from motability sales but that’s no excuse to be treated 2nd class. I know not all dealerships are the same BUT A LOT OF THEM ARE!

                    (rant finished thankyou for reading….Wheezy)

Thanks Wheezy, I am going back into see them again today and I will probably end up doing just that. They better have their tin hats on  as she that must be obeyed is coming with me and she is not happy.

                        Update.

Well we went in yesterday and talked about what happens next as Motability said that as the 2023 Corolla is effectively a new model, nobody could guarantee an AP at the moment. After much apologising from the dealers, we were about to walk out, when my wife said it is a shame that this would be too small. She was looking at a little red Yaris. I had never considered such a small car like that. As we were looking the MB specialist came over and asked us if we wanted to look. We did, and I was shocked to find my scooter broken down fitted in the boot.

After test driving and getting in and out a few times, we decided to go for the range topping Exel. It is fully loaded and can realistically hit 70 mpg. Also the AP is £150 less. Just have to wait until Feb 23 now.

Good to hear that you found a solution Steve, I’d have hoped the dealer would have come up with a “goodwill gesture” under the circumstances.

Steve great to hear you got a “result” but over the next few days just chill and make sure your happy with your choice. You have the car at least three years so best to be sure in the car you get.

TBH, the dealership shouldn’t have charged you an AP for the Yaris as a gesture of good will.

I’m glad your happy, but they’ve got away with some very shoddy customer service there.

Thanks guys, we did think about the car being suitable over the three+ years, and I admit that we never thought we would be looking at a car that small. My scooter is by far the biggest thing we carry, and it fits fine.

The equipment list is brilliant and the mpg out of this world compared to the Kuga, although I will miss my big old beast a little bit.
