Vietnamese brand VinFast will debut new VF e35 SUV at this year’s LA Auto Show, with Pininfarina design and 250-mile range
Vietnamese marque VinFast will debut a new electric SUV at this year’s LA Auto Show. Called VF e35, it’s designed to go head-to-head with the Volkswagen ID.4 and Tesla Model Y. The new car will be available in the US and Europe – possibly including the UK – with styling by Pininfarina and a range of up to 250 miles.
Making its debut alongside a larger SUV called VF e36, the VF e35 is the smaller of the pair, but it’s still around the same size as a Tesla Model Y. Previously, Vinfast intended to launch the models under the names VF32 and VF33.
Technical details for the VF e35 are yet to be confirmed, but previous media reports on the VF32 claimed that single and dual motor configurations will be available, with outputs of 201bhp and 402bhp respectively. A maximum range of 250 miles could be possible, although an official WLTP test figure is yet to be revealed, nor has a battery size.
VinFast has collaborated with Italian styling house Pininfarina to design the VF e35. The front end is angular and heavily sculpted, with a two-layer lighting arrangement that includes an LED light bar spanning the front of the car, split by the VinFast “V” logo.
Silver trim accents extend from the lower front bumper to the sills, and the VF e35 features deep scallops along its flanks and a steeply raked rear window, with a rear light bar design that places the brand’s emblem in the centre.
Inside, a 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen takes centre stage, and like the Tesla Model Y, VinFast hasn’t added a digital instrument panel ahead of the driver. Instead, driving information will likely be baked into the central screen, or projected through a head-up display. A panoramic glass roof will be available, too.
The VF e35 will also be equipped with 14 cameras, an array of LiDAr sensors and 19 360-degree sensors to bring the car to Level 3 autonomous driving capability. This is enabled by a powerful Nvidia Orin X computer chip, which can process 200GB of data per second.
To compete against established rivals in Western markets, the VF e35 is expected to undercut rivals such as the Volkswagen ID.4 and Tesla Model Y on price, with deliveries expected to begin next year.
VinFast VF e36 unveiled as electric seven-seat SUV
The VF e36 will debut at the upcoming LA motor show with seven seats and a Tesla Model X-rivalling range
Vietnamese car-maker VinFast will mark its entry into the Western car market with this: the VF e36, a seven-seat electric SUV flagship to rival the Tesla Model X. The new car will spearhead a range of VinFast EVs destined for the US and Europe, and possibly the UK, when deliveries commence next year.
The VF e36 will launch alongside the smaller VF e35 SUV at this year’s LA Auto Show. The flagship seven-seater was previously called the VF33 when it was announced, and media reports from earlier this year detail what could be the car’s final specification.
At 5.12-metres long, the VF e36 is around the same length as a BMW X7. To power such a large vehicle, VinFast is set to opt for a dual electric motor setup – the single motor option of its smaller VF e35 sibling won’t be available.
According to previous media reports, the dual-motor setup will produce a combined 402bhp. The car will be powered by a 106kWh battery, which could provide a range of almost 350 miles – although we await an official WLTP figure.
The VF e36 is styled by famous Italian design house Pininfarina, and adopts an imposing stance and VinFast’s family face at the front. A set of narrow headlights incorporate an LED light bar that extends across the front of the car, creating “V” shape in the centre, in keeping with the VinFast logo.
A scooped bonnet and a pair of sharp bumper cut-outs bring added aggression, along with a high shoulder-line and bulging wheel arches that house a set of diamond-cut alloy wheels. There’s chrome detailing on the side sills, rear bumper and flush-fitting door handles, too, and a large full-width light bar at the rear.
Like its VF e35 sibling, the VF e36 will use VinFast’s latest infotainment suite. A 15.4-inch infotainment screen is mounted in the centre of the dashboard, which has minimal physical controls. Instead, radio and climate controls will be accessed using the touchscreen, and there’s no traditional gauge cluster or instrument panel, either.
A panoramic glass roof and ambient lighting will also feature inside, along with an array of sensors that enable Level 3 autonomous driving. First deliveries of the VF e36 are expected to arrive next year.
