New Tesco EV charging point

      I was at Tesco this morning, from my disabled parking bay I spotted some new free Podpoint EV charging bays, shame I do not have a Type 2 to Type 1 lead

      Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally say the wrong thing.

        They are free but will cut out after 15 minutes if you don’t check in via the Pod Point app.

        We no longer do a big shopping and are in & out fairly quickly so I don’t find it worth my while getting the cable out to plug in.

        They aren’t really disabled friendly parking bays but because they have chevrons in front of the charger you can get lucky and get parked in a way that’ll allow you access to your door ?

          My Podpoint EV home charger is fitted with a tethered lead, to use the Tesco Podpoint I would have to purchase a Type 2 to 1 lead, as Tesco is only 5 miles from or house like you I cannot justify £130 for a lead.

            Managed to get a brand new lead for £80 including postage, today at our local Tesco’s I decided to try it out, it worked fine. At present Tesco PodPoint 7kW charging points are free to both customers and non customers, I just cannot see this lasting for very long, Tesco are now rolling out 22kW and 50kW charger like Aldi/Lidl etc there is a charge for these.

              With the 3.6 & 7.2kW chargers they are “destination” chargers & are fairly cheap & don’t push out vast amounts of electricity. If you are parked for an hour you’ll only put in 3.6kW on your car, so at say 15p/kWh, so 54 pence worth. If you drive a fossil you can get 10p off per litre which adds up to a whole lot more, & that’s why Tesco can do these destination chargers for free.

              When you use a 22kW AC, or a 50kW+ DC charger it’s a different scale, my Pug e-2008 will suckle 100kW upto 27% & then 72kW up to 54% and then drop to about 52kW to 72% & then I head for the next stop as it slows right down. I wouldn’t expect a supermarket to subsidise these much larger amounts of power & these types of charger aren’t meant as destination chargers, they’re for topping up as part of a longer journey. Tesco have one of these 50kW chargers at one of their stores in Crawley, just down the road from Gatwick airport of course, which makes good sense as people can pick their car up after a holiday, plug it in & pop in the garage shop to get milk/bread etc., & then have enough charge to get them home 100 miles plus away.

               

              I tried using one of the Tesco PodPoint posts at Guildford but the app was still trying to connect when I came out of the store so had stopped after the 15 minutes. I’ve used the posts at a couple of Asda stores, they do 3.6kW & 7.2kW, so I used the 7.2kW sockets with success, they are on Polar so probably do cost a connection charge unless you use a Polar Plus card, which I have as I use Polar ultra-rapids quite often (150kW chargers). And I’ve used some Waitrose chargers, again they were Polar but all newer 7.2kW all round. If I’m somewhere shopping & there’s free electrons being offered of course I’ll plug in as currently it tells the owners (the supermarkets) how frequently these posts are used & the more they are used the faster they will roll more of them out.

                With regards to the tesco free chargers, do you need the pod point account or can you just jump on and charge without any type of card or account??

                  I think for the PodPoint ones it’s the PodPoint app & it takes £10 the first time you use it, which then stays there if you only use their free chargers.

                  Not sure how the Polar works as I have a PolarPlus card (3 months free when you open the account, then added 6 months free via the referal code that Peugeot sent me for the car, after that it’s £7.65 a month I think so wouldn’t be worth having but there is a Polar App too with different rates).

                      That’s very interesting, so no £10 charge & it still works with the posts, nice. Ideal for PHEVs.

                       

                      Another place you’ll find PodPoint posts is in many of the railway station car parks, which at the moment are near deserted so easy to park up & use. However, you do have to register annually to use the car parks that you’ll want to use for disabled free parking and you have to use a text to park process using the right code.

                          Apparently the 50kW units are £0.24@kW

                           

                          That compares well with the Aldi £0.23kW

                          Polar is £0.30 or £0.15 on the 50kW chargers with the Polar Plus membership

                          Instavolt £0.35

                          Ionity £0.69 but they are 350kW chargers (Alas the Porsche Taycan isn’t on the scheme… yet, to make use of them).

                            As we tow a caravan we have gone for a PHEV, unfortunately they only have a slow 3.6kW charger, the new Ford Kuga PHEV has a 7kW, so we cannot really take advantage of 7kW or higher speed chargers.

                            If we did not tow a caravan our next Motability car would be a full EV, we are hoping we can extend our lease long enough, hopefully there will be EV on the Motability scheme capable of towing a 1500kg  caravan, otherwise its going to be another PHEV.

                              There’s a worse problem coming when it comes to EVs & towing, all the EV charge bays that are being constructed now aren’t designed with towing in mind, thay are simply parking spaces with a charger.

                              Same with wheelchair access, most of these EV charge bays are not wheelchair friendly at all.
