MaccaGotta say, its a brand that’s never particularly grabbed my attention, however when it comes to the styling of the Torres EV SUV, it’s like the elves have spent the weekend in the dark shady places of my mind, and come up with something that I really like ??♂️.
A lot of the promo videos show it with some horrendous tan/orange interior, but then I saw this promo which shows a choice of interiors including trusty old black, which casts it in a much better light ….
Gotta be honest it’s sparked a wee bit of attention. I’ll be curious to see if it makes it to the scheme, as another site suggests it will. If so then at what AP.
Initial thoughts people ? ?

PhilLooks like a Jeep and Suzuki love child. Some angles it just doesn’t sit right and it looks cheap, even tho it won’t be.
It’s a solid no for me.
March 28, 2023 at 2:55 pm #216766Aren’t Sangyong rebranding as KG Mobility?
March 28, 2023 at 3:13 pm #216768
MaccaI think if the Torres EVX made it onto scheme, I would certainly go check it out in the flesh.
The tricky thing is the dealers in my locale are also Subaru dealers which is where a real big interest lies for me. Now if one makes it onto scheme and the other doesn’t, that would be a hard showroom visit for sure.

MaccaKG have bought them apparently
March 28, 2023 at 3:17 pm #216772
MaccaThere’s certainly some styling improvements from the petrol to the EVX.
I think it’s very easy to dismiss these brands, and I’ve certainly been guilty of it too. Let’s face it, the way that the Kia’s and Hyundai’s are considered in today’s market for instance is hugely different to how they were considered some years back.
But the times are a changing and I’m just keeping an open mind on these things. There seems to be a lot going on in the industry.
March 28, 2023 at 3:22 pm #216774KG Group, a Korean company specializing in steel and chemicals, acquired a 61.86% stake in SsangYong Motors last August after the automaker went into receivership. The goal of the new name which will be combined with a redesigned logo and a new corporate identity is to leave the past behind and start a new era for the company.

MaccaI certainly don’t dislike the syling of the Torres EVX, and there’s talk of a 310 mile range …

MaccaPimp shots at 1 minute 56 in ? …
Gotta be seeing this in the flesh I think ?

RiwlsJust got back from South Korea, the Torres looks amazing in the flesh, it is fresh and different and looks like a very expensive SUV and the quality outside and inside is superb. Believe me, this is going to be a big seller in the UK……
March 30, 2023 at 4:01 pm #216965
MaccaThere are many aspects to its design that appeal to me, including the perculiar bonnet fitments, angled side decor panels, sculptured side steps, fake rear spare wheel decor, and rear hatch that looks like it should be a side opening door, but isn’t.
March 30, 2023 at 6:10 pm #216986im betting it doesn’t get good range unless it has a humungus battery, and even then… more like a range rover

MaccaEarly days on accurate details, seen one report of 211 miles, one if 310.
Have to see what comes out officially, and hopefully with clarity on whether its to be sold in the UK
But if it is UK bound, and there are no positive moves on Subaru joining the scheme, or the XTrail in a decent spec, then i’d be open minded to check out the Torres EVX, along with the Ford Explorer too should they be available on scheme
March 31, 2023 at 12:24 am #217022The Torres (codename J100) will be available with ICE in Korea and else where (Aus etc) For Europe it will only be available as a BEV (codenamed U100). It will be positioned above the Korando e-Motion BEV (Europe)

The interior of the Torres EV is expected to look nearly identical to the gasoline-powered model (pictured). The dashboard would have a slim profile and be an unusual blend of traditional and modern bits. A digital instrument cluster, and a dash of ambient light. Two touchscreens, a 12.3-inch (infotainment control) unit on the top and an 8-inch (comfort control) unit at the bottom.Another highlight would be a compact but still tough- and modern-looking four-spoke steering.
The electric variant of the Torres could offer slightly better cargo space. For reference, the ICE variant has 703 liters of cargo space, and on folding down the second-row seats, that number increases to 1,662 liters. safety features are expected to be plentiful to meet Europes safety standards.
There is not alot known about electrical specifications. However SsangYong has partnered with BYD for using its Blade battery technology in the electric SUV. What that means is the Torres electric will be available with one or more battery packs consisting of LFP (LiFePO4) cells. BYD has advanced rapidly with the LFP chemistry, and is now commercially using them in cell-to-pack (CTP) and cell-to-body (CTB) formats as well. BYD’s Blade battery is widely said to be the safest BEV battery to date.
Blade batteries have successfully passed nail penetration tests without emitting smoke or fire. They have maintained a 30-60°C temperature under the same conditions in which a lithium-ion battery’s temperature would have exceeded 500°C and violently burned. Blade batteries have passed other extreme tests like being bent, crushed, heated in a furnace to 300°C, and being overcharged by 260% without causing a fire or explosion.
The Torres EV will feature BYD’s Blade battery technology and could deliver a WLTP range of 250-300 miles. Image Source: BYD

SsangYong will likely build the Torres Electric alongside the Torres on Assembly Line 1 at its Pyeongtaek plant in South Korea. The company started the series production of the Torres on June 30.
The Ssangyong Torres EV will hit the European markets towards the end of next year. It could cost around EUR 45,000 onwards and compete with the MG Marvel R and the Skoda Enyaq iV.
For the European market, an EV version of Torres, project name U100, will be introduced towards the end of 2023. (Ssangyong Motor UK Limited’s announcement on May 19, 2022)
SsangYong unveiled a zero-emission version of the Korando earlier this year, called the e-Motion. It was the brand’s first electric car – and it’s possible that the Torres EV could use a similar version of its powertrain. The Korando uses BYD’s Blade battery technology – the Korando e-Motion is powered by a 188bhp electric motor and a 61.5kWh battery pack, which SsangYong says give the car a maximum range of around 210 miles.
The gasoline-powered Torres has received a great response in South Korea. On June 15, 2022, SsangYong announced that it garnered more than 10,200 pre-orders on the first day of sales. That’s the most the company has ever received for a new model on the day it started taking pre-orders. The gasoline-powered model will likely go on sale in SsangYong’s home market in July 2022.

Land Rover Defender?

MaccaInteresting read Kezo, although the tan/orange option on the Torres would not be on my wish list.
Very curioys to see how this one plays out though.

MaccaMarch 31, 2023 at 9:28 am #217035WLTP of 250 miles would turn into a reality of 130ish in winter. I can imagine a lot of people very unhappy with that outcome. I’d also expect the size to make it one of those that will lose range very quickly if you keep to the speed limit on motorways.

I would doubt you would lose 120 miles in winter, more like 20 to 30 miles.
March 31, 2023 at 10:43 am #217048BYD’s blade battery is different from the traditional lithium-ion battery. The problem of iron dissolution is controlled at the cell level, so the battery’s range can be increased. In addition, BYD adopts a more scientific thermal management system on the blade battery, which can automatically control the internal temperature of the battery at an optimal working temperature. Therefore, in the case of low temperature, the internal temperature of the battery can be evenly distributed. To a certain extent, the impact of low temperature on the battery is slowed down. All in all, from my own experience, driving an electric car in winter will feel that the battery life is significantly shorter than in other seasons, but technology is advancing and the times are developing. With the launch of BYD’s new technology, it can be certain To alleviate this embarrassing situation, if you often use new energy vehicles in cold weather, you can consider BYD’s new technology

So, some indication of my thoughts on range. WLTP is fiction. I’d expect a car quoted at 250 miles would give 200ish around town with a little A-road type driving in the summer. Go on motorways and that’d drop. Again drop the temperatures and the range would drop further. So, at a steady 70 at temperatures near freezing I’d estimate the return to be around 130 miles, partly because it’s a big beast with not a lot of aerodynamic efficiency and partly because just about every electric vehicle loses range in the cold.

SmoggyIf you make good enough cars then brand recognition follows.
Kia, Hyundai, Dacia, Skoda all brands you didn’t want at one point.
Haven’t read much on KG and if the partnership that Susan had with Mercedes will continue but friend had the Merc engined turismo and loved it and not one bit of bother in the 5 years of ownership.

MaccaA little more info on the Torres EVX range and specs …
September 19, 2023 at 4:59 pm #233998
MaccaSo the drums are now beginning to beat on the impending arrival of the Torres EVX, with a suggestion from one dealer that it may even join the scheme before the year is over.
Right now, i’m not wanting to make the switch to a full EV, but this has grabbed my interest from the point it was teased to the industry.
I’m certainly keen to see it in the flesh, and see how it sizes up to our current XC40.
