It’s the Wankel rotary engine (been used by Mazda for years/decades) coupled like the E-Qashqai/XTrail where all it does is provide power to a battery drive system.
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!
August 2, 2023 at 4:13 pm #228934Can you remember the the Mazda RX8, it was powered by a Wankel Rotary engine, which unusually high 8500rpm.
The MX30 would have a small rotary engine to act soley as a range extender rather than power the car.

LeanneSo what does mean ? I stay in a flat ground floor but parking is street parking. What does the range extender do ?
August 2, 2023 at 10:34 pm #228948When the car has no charge, it powers up the engine and that powers the electric motors.
August 2, 2023 at 11:30 pm #228949It is essentially a plug in hybrid (PHEV), which will drive on electric power for around 50 miles – once the battery is depleted, the engine starts and acts as a generator to charge the battery which powers the electric motors so you can carry on your journey, similar to how the Nissan E-Power works. However you don’t have to plug the Nissan in, as its more a full hybrid.
Given you have on street parking, it would be ulikely you would have the facility to plug it in at home to recharge the battery making use of cheaper electric to cover around 50 miles of electric only driving. You would have to rely on charging at supermarkets or more expensive charging points. Incidently the MC30 r ev would take around 90 minutes on a 7kW charger.
A hybrid such as the Renaualt Clio, Austral or Nissan would be more suitable as you don’t have to plug them in 🙂

LeanneIf I was to purchase the range extender version of this car ( advised will be getting added to motability) will I still need to plug it in to charge or will the petrol and drive keep battery charged ?
been trying to read about it but all confusing

No, although it will be driven as a normal hybrid, srather imilar to that of the Nissan E-Power. The benifit of plugging it in, is you get around 50 miles of battery range. PersonalLy I would prefer it over the pure electric version, even if I only topped it up at supermarkets or got to plug it in on longer journeys.

LeanneDefinitely not getting full electric but if it gave me benefit to not having charger at home then it’s a winner.
