Motability vs 0% APR deals (EV only)

Sometime ago I raised a question about Motability vs going privately.

People replied with very valid comments of who is going to pay for the car? If it is me outright- I am losing alternative income I could have from the money.  If it is a loan – I must accommodate interest in my calculations.

This in addition to the usual insurance/ left foot accelerator fixed costs.

Recently there are plenty of 0% APR deals on brand new as well as second hand EVs (not sure if I am permitted to name them here) and I wonder if people would recommend considering it as an alternative to Motability,  providing they would do circa 23,000 miles pa.

The only realistic answer is to do the numbers for yourself.

You’re looking at a financed car with service schedule pre-paid plus insurance.  You’ll be limited on insurance companies, especially if your only driving/insurance history is on the scheme, as some won’t consider driving experience on a company/scheme car as an alternative to the ncb, even if you’ve gone 20 years or more claim free.

The reality is that most quoted offers will be for low mileage and increasing to near Motability levels could well prove expensive, only getting a personalised quote will add clarity.

One upside is you get a wider choice, as long as they’re offering 0%.  Don’t forget to register the car as your disability vehicle for RFL otherwise you’ll get clobbered for a fortune under the new rates.

I'll try to give my honest opinion but am always open to learning.

Back in the day you used to get VAT knocked off new cars, but now it isn’t so easy.

Your biggest enemy buying a car is deprecation.

IMHO I don’t think there are many deals or alternatives that compare to the Motability Scheme.

Fair enough you could use your allowance to pay for a private or lease car? But will it come with the worry free motoring that the Motability Scheme is offering?!

For example a brand new car every 3 years, 20,000 p.a mileage allowance, free servicing and tyres, car insurance, breakdown cover. Show me a deal for a private sale or lease car purchase that provides all the benefits listed above for the same amount of money,I doubt you could?!

I can’t thank the Motability Scheme enough! When they say it’s “Worry Free Motoring” they are spot on! It’s just one less thing to worry about.

Normally i would agree.  you cannot touch the contract from Motability with a pcp or lease but I’ve just seen the Q3 price list for VW ID range.  the ID.4 is now starting at £3249 and the ID.5 £5899 APs,  6months ago they were £999 and £2749 respectively.   it seems that the disabled world is being hit upon once again.

I’d still prefer Motability myself. 0% deals tend to have bigger deposits than the AP’s we face and then there’s the all inclusive nature of the scheme. But then we don’t own anything at the end of the lease so the answer is probably different for everyone.

If I seem a little strange, that's because I am.

Just over 3 years ago I left the scheme and bought a new car on HP at 0% it wasn’t really an issue until next-door crashed into the car and drove off and it will be going to court soon as they not admitting liability. So worst case my premium on next renewal would jump. Even best case it will still rise as I have made a non fault claim, so I’m now more of a risk.

So I decided after it was fixed which cost 6.5k and a hire car for around a month as parts was on backorder. To come back to the scheme. Ordered my car late oct and it arrived beginning of feb and to get an EV as they was offering £750 nvp and a free home charger. As now an EV suits our main usage.

Plus as I got the car at 0% I actually had positive equity in it. So actually I was no worse off really than if I’d leased on the scheme. So it can work but the scheme does give you a lot of positives many have mentioned.

Although for the time off the scheme I didn’t have to worry about losing my pip and then losing my car and my life line to the outside world, come the next review. Now I have that worry in the back of my mind and Liebour have brought it all up again. So its a constant worry that, what if you lose your lifeline and they change the rules and conditions etc on you to save money. I try to just ignore it and put it to the back of my mind, but it’s not easy to do. Stress also effects some of my conditions hugely and like I said I didn’t have that off the scheme, but its come back being on it again because of the attack on people with disabilities.

It will be what it will be but still, life shouldn’t be like this. we shouldn’t be treated like this. So I guess that’s a real positive to being off the scheme.

Just bear in mind if you go for PCP and require adaptations to the car the finance company may not allow them.

IF you absolutely must have a brand new car (why?), especially if it’s an EV, and you do average to high mileage, sourcing via Motability is a no brainer.

If you are happy to run a used EV (but check the insurance cost first), dealers are virtually giving them away (some are as little as 20% of their new cost) as they can’t sell them. Ownership costs would be significantly cheaper than running a new one from Motability.

The issue of EV residual values means that only a fool would buy a brand new one with their own money – even at 0% interest!

If you are going to buy a EV? IMO buy a secondhand one! There are some great deals to be had for 1-3 year old EV cars.

Haven’t made my mind yet, but considering I Pace on 0% APR PCP. But so far there are only prior 2023 models, which known for their issues.

The benefits of PCP that I can decide in due course to buy and keep it, should I be lucky and find a reliable exemplar,  or I can return it back as long as I paid 50% of the PCP. Something we cannot do under Motability or any other lease (nothing against Motability – these are standard terms of any car leasing).
