From the ‘other website’ (most know what I mean) posted yesterday 17th June 25, is news that Motability/Direct Line are increasing the standard insurance excess from £100 to £250 for all new lease applications placed on or after 1st October 2025.

Also increasing is the windscreen/glass excess, from £50 to £100.

I presume the increased excesses for young/inexperienced drivers may also increase in line with this, albeit this is not currently stated.

It will no doubt be promulgated on the main Motability and Motability Direct Line websites in due course.

            Thanks Dave

Direct Line have had operating losses of £301m since since 2022, which included a loss of £190m in 2023, the same year Motability moved over to DLM. This comes in the wake of the Direct Line group investigation by the FCA for overcharging customers from 2022, whick lead to an estimatated £30million in compensation to car and home insurance customers.

DLM’s service is a far cry from that offered by RSA – My mun was refused an hire car when her Kona went in for relatively minor accident damage earlier in the year and she isn’t the only one, who has had infavourable dealings with DLM, judging by some on forum and elsewhere.

Yes it appears DL have a far inferior offering to that the RSA used to give motability customers.  Motability seems to be on a race to the bottom at the moment.

Possibly more cars being returned at the end of lease with damage which could have been repaired, punters will weigh up the £250 excess against the loss of £250 good condition bonus.

Like now I’ll continue driving with a cracked windscreen then. I won’t be lining their pockets with £100 every few months because the council dumps 5 tons of gravel and tar on the road and calls it fixed.

New Enyaq last July already on my 34d windscreen now. Until the crack interferes with driving it can stay cracked. I don’t think many of us would go with an insurance company that whacks the excesses up.

This coupled with gov stealing welfare from us. How many will stay on Motability if they have to pay that and lose the daily living allowance of PIP because they didn’t get 4 points in one question FFS

Motability really need some competition lately they’re being terrible for disabled drivers

Race to the bottom? They got there several years ago, now they’re digging

I KNOW it’s still £50 the point was the cars 12 months old and now on the 3rd screen if they’re DOUBLING the excess why don’t you think I’d be angry?

I don’t even think they can do this, I’ve just been thru the contract I agreed to and the excesses are hard written in, it doesn’t refer to see insurance company it actually says £50 etc. On top of that the only provision for increasing relates to increase in money to MB not excess rises.

I’m challenging them to produce the terms. Odds are it’s in there and I’ve missed it. I’m 200 miles from home on a phone so easily done but we’ll see. I don’t see how more than doubling the amount mid contract is right.

It’s for new applications, not current applications. Yours is, and will stay, £50 until your next lease.

This is going to happen 100%. We had a small bump. The Quote for the work was £300, but I weighed it up; the car is due back in October. I would get the GCB back. So the £100 excess is worth it. Fast forward, I would leave the damage.

Question for the group. My renewal date is the end of October. If I were to submit the application before the end of the quarter, would my policy be the old rate of £100? Or does it come live on car collection date?
