Hi,

I am a long time user of motability and in need of a wheelchair roof hoist rather than the boot hoist. The roof version would cost quite a bit alone so am applying for a grant.

I was told when calling about a grant that the choice of car is down to them rather than myself. Is this a new thing?

The charity has limited funds and have to help as many people as they can. So the choice of vehicle may well be limited to what they consider suitable to keep you mobile and meet your needs (not your wants). Of course, you may want bigger and better but that, in the charities eyes, counts for nothing.

Is this a new thing, no, I don’t think it is.

Hi thanks for your reply. Completely understand it’s based on needs, I do need the adaptations I’ve asked for. Wasn’t looking for anything outlandish car-wise, just surprised me a bit that he mentioned the choice is theirs as I’ve always been able to choose a car myself in the past so wondered if it was new. Maybe I’ve just been lucky previously and chose the exact right car for their specifications! haha

I have yes, this is my first new car since 2019 as I had an extension after the initial 3 year lease, prices are quite different now.

The roof boxes are very expensive aren’t they? Will the grant cover that??

I must say Motability grants have been really helpful with my Abarth I already had hand controls fitted when I got my car and now 7 months later have agreed to fund a 42kg two way hoist which is good news for getting my autofold scooter loaded.
