Motability EV charger share scheme

Yesterday i had a really bizarre telephone call from Motability regarding sharing my wall charger with other Motability users, has any other EV owners had the same call ?

Apparently they are releasing an AP that allows users to make appointments to charge their EV in your drive way if you have a fixed charger. There is an agreed tariff that will cover your electricity usage and the moment they finish the charge the money is paid into your account.

At first i thought it was a bogus call but they were very serious, i politely declined on the spot. i have never heard of anything so stupid in all my life. Yes it may allow users that cannot have chargers fit obtain an EV but who seriously wants that intrusion in their life of a constant stream of people in your driveway charging cars for an hour at a time.

I suppose it could suit someone who was out at work all day and wasn’t using their parking spot, but what is the other EV owner going to do while the car is charging?

There is already a app where you can already do this I guess there is pros and cons but not sure it would be for me.

I agree that sounds very weird Stuart. Unless they are going to build in a large gratuity, above the cost of the electricity used, I can’t see anyone agreeing to that. Perhaps they are calling people to gauge their reaction before releasing the app, in which case I doubt it will ever see the light of day.

Have access to the home for refreshments and toileting needs before their onward journey.

I rather think my house insurer would give a big fat no to such an arrangement and would then want to sell me commercial insurance at a vastly higher premium.

I have an ap on my phone which rents my charger out. Happy to share my resource for mutual benefit.

I think you are missing the point, it is a way to share your home charger with neighbours who don’t have access to a home charger. Your neighbour arranges the use of the charger with you through the app, and then pays a fee that you have agreed. They can then park their car on your drive to use your charger when you aren’t using it.

She did say the uptake had been very low and i can understand why. Like other people have said what are the people going to do while they sit on your drive for a few hours while the car charges, remember these wall chargers are only 7kw. Nobody is going to sit there for 4 hours without the use of a toilet.

I dont think im missing the point at all, the woman was quite clear who the scheme was targeting and it certainly was not my neighbours, yes there are other apps out there and im well aware of those but this was purely aimed at Motability operations customers and as i said previously i cannot see anyone sitting in your drive for 4 hours without needing to access your property for toilet etc.

It all depends on where you live and what is nearby. It won’t work for everyone but then I don’t think that will be the goal. It’s just another possible way to charge. For example if the charger is located on the edge of a village and you could park up (parking space sorted) pop into the village do whatever then come back and leave then it could work. You won’t charge the car all the way from 20% to 80% in that time but again I doubt that is the aim either.
overall I think it’s good that there are new ways of charging being developed. Might not work long term but a better idea might come from this, who knows. Also, if it doesn’t work for you or me, it will work for others which will surely free up other charging points somewhere else

It’s a very good idea and a win, win for both parties. We hear a lot about range anxiety so having motability charging points throughout the country will help to ease that. The person supplying the charger will make some money, as it’s unlikely mist would do it for nothing, and the person charging gets a charger they know works and, with organising in advance, will be ready to use.

Think about being on holiday and having these options available to you. No stress no hassle just plug it in and go do some shopping, have lunch or go sight seeing.

                                      I think it’s a great idea.

Might not suit you but I don’t see the issue.  If I’m out at work for 8 hours and somebody wants to use my charger on some new scheme motability have created where I’m paid an agreed tariff immediately.  Why not.  Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a drive and hime charger.  If it gets more users into EVs it might be a good thing.
