Most of us are feeling the pinch with inflation hitting 10%+ and fuel bills hitting catastrophic levels so i thought it would be a good idea to share some of our money saving tips.

I thought i would post a link to https://www.moneysavingexpert.com Martin Lewis money saving advice as he’s a pro but here are some of my own.

      1. Freeze your loaf on purchase day and just take out what you need when you need it.

      2. Half your dishwasher tablet as that’s all you need and it will do a similar job.

      3. When using your oven try and cook as many meals as possible at the same time.

      4. Do you put loads of cold water in your bath after running the hot? turn your water heat level down on your boiler. Do this a bit at a time until you achieve a temperature that suits you and have a bath with the wife/husband, or, at the very least use the same bath water.

      5. Turn your washing machine temp down to 30 degrees, and use the quick wash for most clothes, only using a longer cycle for soiled garments.

Lets hear your tips, if you have any.

don’t buy anything. eat less. use microwave meals instead of oven meals. if you have an old freezer, buy a new one. if you rarely use your freezer, switch it off. switch off microwave at wall when not in use(surprising how much power it uses on standby). use modern led lights. use money saved to buy whisky. be happy..

If you have kids / grandkids, Asda are feeding kids for £1 in their cafe till the 4th September, no need for adults to buy a meal and no minimum spend, just £1 kids meals!

That’s great Jojoe, thanks for the info, most of the Asda stores near me have closed their cafes, turned them onto McDs and such like, even Sainsbury closed theirs recently too, now just a storage area… Shame great latte’s..

Great deal for the parents though if you have the asda cafe up and running..

I understand a lot about heating systems having designed and installed my own the the past. I would absolutely recommend anyone who doesn’t to read this article. It is excellent. Thanks for posting it Oscarmax.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>In fairly lucky in that my house is fairly thermally warm.</p>
There is tons of insulation in loft. The cavity walls have recently been redone, and have fairly modern double glazing.

The central heating is relatively young at about 9 yes. Combi Boiler has never given any issues. Doors are ok too

I use the zapper if making 1 or 2 cuppa’s for me and the wife. I also cook alot of meat, meals in a slowcooker to cut down on oven use.

I switched off the extractor fan in the bathroom. It was on a pull cord and we’d leave it on for 30 minutes or so after a shower. We have double glazing which allows you to fully lock the window whilst it’s slightly open to vent the room. I’ve read extractor fans use quite a bit of electric.

I use small solar lights instead of maims lights – I put them on the window sills during the day ti charge and then around the house ti light things up by motion at night time lol – mad but it works. Boiler at lowest temperature / eco mode when used .

fast daily wash in low temp for my clothes – works perfectly well

I’m a spark and fitted an exhaust fan on the exterior (only a vent cover inside) a couple of years ago. It clears the bathroom in no time especially on high. I think it cost around £75 trade (£110 retail)

A ventaxia 4″ silent extractor fan uses 3.2w on low and 5w on high. Where as a centrifugal fan uses 19w.  1Kw of electricity is equal to 1000watts. Taking the centrifugal fan  uses 19w it would have to be on for 52hrs to consume 1Kw of electricty 1000/19. On the otherhand a cooling fan can use around 40w (1000/40=25hrs runtime to consume 1Kw of electricity.

My advice is to run your bathroom fan during and after a shower for 20 – 30mins and then allow any condensation left to tricke out the window. You do not want to run the risk of condensation build up which can seap through plasterboard ceilings or bath room cabinets over time or run the risk of a mould problem especially in winter, that could prove more costly in the long run. Oh and ignore over exaggerated scaremongering articals in the media.

What bathrom fan do you have?

You can calculate most appliances by the same formula 1000/x watts. An electric oven or kettle will be in Kw, so for example a 3Kw kettle will say take 5mins to boil. you would have to boil it 12 times before it used 3Kw/h of electricity. 3Kw/h of electricity say =3 x 55p (Kw/h price)=£1.65 now divide that by 12, it costs £0.1375p each time you boil the kettle. ?

@kezo It’s a 4 inch fan, the walls are fully tiled. I’m happy to vent via the window in warmer months. I’ll use the fan in the depths of winter.

Save more and don’t use shower. Wash at sink . Hey my gran and grandad did it all their lives as they had no bathroom, and were perfectly clean.  He was a dispensing chemist in Aberdeen.
