Opinions are of course subjective, however I feel the crown has dropped from the “so called” premium German marques” and with the advent of electric a changing of the guard will occur, if not already happening. When I was young it was a dream of many to own a Merc or BMW, however , having had 2 BMW¨s and had 3 merc´s as courtesy cars, the gap between these and the “mainstream” brands is wafer thin, non existent and in many cases they have the edge.

I would say this article is more clickbait than anything else. I’m currently looking around for my next company car. I’m visiting showrooms and also reading a lot of reviews. Some of those cars above don’t even get good ratings from the motoring press and certainly don’t look premium in the flesh.

What needs to be remembered is that journalists write articles for the money and are paid by the word …

It is only the bottom end BMW, Mercedes and Audi which are slightly comparable. Think id rather have an Audi Q3 than a KIA or a 1 series to a Mazda. When you take a step up to the 3 series, C class, ect then there is just no comparison.  If you had the choice between a new 3 series or a Hyundai who would pick the Hyundai? In the end it usually comes down to what you can afford.

Many of the higher end cars from these manufacturers score badly for reliability. This is a crucial factor for private buyer’s and indeed fleets.

A  Robin Reliant is reliable you drive that and ill wave at you whilst I pass in my BMW.

Probably the Reliant driver will wave at the broken down BMW driver!

Haha, The main thing for me is having a car which you enjoy being in and driving. All cars can have problems, and usually the most reliable cars are just boring and not fun to drive.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>The best drivers car I had was a 1 series RWD. The most reliable a Hillman Avenger. 10 years old when I purchased it and 3 years motoring without a single issue.</p>

I have never heard about a BMW braking down maybe with a 20 year old model that has not been looked after.  Any car from new if it is well maintained will be reliable. Every car manufacturer needs to make money from car parts and repairs in the end.  If you are buying through Motability its not something you have to worry about. If your buying private you just buy whatever car you can afford to run and maintain.

I had an X1. Nightmare. Auto box problems. Back to main dealer 3 times. After 6 months and a range of courtesy cars lease terminated. Breakdown happen to all manufacturers.  A night end marque makes no difference.

That’s unlucky I wouldn’t drive an X1 though they are horrible but there is a new X1 coming out which will be a huge improvement.  The top 10 luxury car list Rang Rover is at number 1. Top 10 reliable Skoda at number 1 would you rather drive a Skoda or a Range Rover If you had the choice.

Ste thinks the X1 is horrible (we had ours 3 years and it was excellent) and that the new X1 will be a huge improvement. Where do you get your knowledge Ste?

Range Rover or Skoda? Range Rover if I could have one of the original, early, alloy-bodied, two-door V8s. In practical terms, though, I’d have the Skoda Superb over all the others – so long as it’s one of the L&K 4×4 petrol-engined ones.

Definitely the Skoda to be honest. Range Rover does have some perks, those perks are not of enough value enough for my taste. More flash than utility.

A Skoda and a Range Rover seems like a strange comparison to me considering they both target different areas of the market. I can’t imagine there’s many people in the world who shortlist a Skoda and a Range Rover at the same time

Obviously there is no comparison between a Range Rover and a Skoda the Range is in a completely different league which is why its 4 times more expensive. The point I was making is why you would choose a standard boring car with sluggish interface and the rest of it over a premium one such as a BMW. The main reason I can see is jealousy, if it is unattainable to them they build a hate towards it. @Tharg An original v8 2 door Range well if you want to drive a shed on wheels with a ton of smoke coming from the exhaust over a new one then I really don’t know lol. @Wigwam In my opinion I just don’t like the shape of the X1 or the layout. The 20i xdrive is the best car available on the Motability scheme when comparing it with the others on there. The new X1 should be revealed later this year but I think this one will be a bit to premium for the Motability customers and will likely be removed. So will have to stick with driving the Skoda’s and Nissan leafs.

Most BMW’s I’ve privately owned over the years have been faux luxury. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many VAG vehicles had surpassed, even matched many aspects of the brand.

Current X1 is one of the worst value for money offerings on the scheme currently. In terms of luxury it’s woefully behind the rest of the offerings in the BMW range, let alone alternative manufacturers.
