With heating so expensive to run I thought we could carry out an experiment detailing when we put our heating on/off. We all live in different areas of the country so a general location would be good also.
So my info for today is:-
Temp outside – 10*C
Temp inside – 19*C
Heating – off
Location – Central Scotland
Heating source – Gas central heating by combi boiler

10/21/heating on full tilt!
We use Wiser @kezo. Excellent product and put it in myself. I also use their plugs which are expensive but reliable.

Good on you mate, its not rocket science fitting them is it.
The only issue is if you have very old thermostatic valves, where the adaptor won’t fit valves or non thermostatic valves.
Outside temp 12c
Inside temp 18.3c
No heating

20*C inside
Heating 24 hrs a day (for the daughter’s dog ? )
Continuing with the heating hot water at 46*C with no problems so far.
What I have noticed, with running the heating 24/7, is the radiators are cool a lot. I’m assuming that means the insulation is doing a decent job.
It hasn’t really been that cold recently so I’ve still a lot to learn about how well my trial will work.
I did notice that some manufacturers are offering a heat pump/combo boiler “hybrid” where the combi is used for hot water and to top up the heat pump heating if required. This is something I could be interested in as I don’t really want a big water tank in the house.

I’m having smart meters installed and will probably start recording my usage on a regular basis and thought maybe others would also.

Location Malvern Hills, but only for another 8 days. I’m making the most of the superb views for the next week. Relocating with the family to a nice village 15 miles away for health and safety reasons, lol.

I intend to run the combi boiler radiator temperature at 40*C until I get my air source heat pump fitted in the next few weeks. Once it’s in I will let you know if it’s any good, if its rubbish I will let you know. I will still have my combi boiler so I can switch that back on in the event of the heat pump being unsuitable.

I’ve been running the combi heating 24/7 for 19 days and have used 34 cubic feet of gas. According to Google that’s 1040 ish kwh.

I blame the gas cooker. I need to invest in one of those air fryers, but I don’t like contraptions cluttering up my kitchen.
October 20, 2024 at 10:51 am #291393I almost never use my electric ovens since I got an air fryer wmc. It does take up a bit of space but not too much. If I was to get another one I would go for the one with the removable partition so I could have two cooking areas most of the time but I could cook a larger chicken if I needed to.
My gas figures include hot water.
My total gas usage last year was 16500 kwh.

We’ve got a dual air fryer and a ninja multi 7 in 1.
I’m currently slow cooking a chicken in the ninja, sliced carrots and onions in the pot with 300ml stock and chicken sat on top, cook for 5 hours. Only thing I use the oven for is roast potatoes as I just can’t get them as nice in the air fryer.

October 20, 2024 at 1:39 pm #291399I’m an inveterate browser and researcher of anything new that I plan to purchase. (far too much time on my hands, lol)
Two years ago (approx) I bought a Ninja AF 400 max twin basket air fryer. It has been the most impressive bit of ‘cooking kit’ that I’ve ever used. It’s used every single day and is easy to clean and maintain even with regular daily use. It still looks and works like new. I would highly recommend it.
Much quicker than conventional ovens, good results, efficient and economical.
October 20, 2024 at 3:00 pm #291403I’ve had a Lakeland twin drawer air fryer for over a year has 3 year warranty was £99 I love it does lovely roast potatoes 20 mins fish fingers scampi 15 mins sausages 20 mins pukka pie 20 mins etc very handy indeed
October 21, 2024 at 12:02 pm #291438Continuing with my 24/7 heating trial so 21.5/22 *C during the day and 19*C overnight., with the radiator hot water set at 40*C. Its been close to freezing overnight on a couple of occasions but mostly quite mild day and night since I started.
Having smart meters fitted this week and my air source heat pump, solar and battery storage fitted early next month.
Once they are installed I will be running my heating via the heat pump, charging my batteries overnight on cheap electricity and running the heat pump from the batteries during the day. I’m expecting an efficiency of 300% so 3kw is produced for every 1kw that’s put in.
