living with a C5 Aircross: fuel economy and mpg

This is not a drill! Team Aircross (me and my C5) have just smashed 400 miles from a tank! Regular readers will have monitored my conversion from driving as if in a James Bond car chase to pootling around as if James Blunt was permaloop on the stereo, to savour the benefit of the C5’s comfy nature.

So I’ve been building up to some economy runs. The winning formula? Eco button on to anaesthetise the accelerator, air-con mostly off, progress at a pace that enables me to check out the countryside and hum You’re Beautiful. The result: 440 miles from 50-odd litres, at 40mpg. That’s better than the official mpg figure, and no fluke: Team Aircross scored 420 miles again a few weeks later.

Average speed is an important factor not mentioned.
Even so, I honestly don’t think 40mpg is anything to write home about. I dread to think what he was getting driving normally.

My X1 18d smashes those figures, even with town driving and under 30mph. I’m depressed if she goes under 50mpg which would usually be due to crawling traffic, jams, etc.

On various runs equaling a few hundred miles, in the region of 60 miles each and with reasonable traffic, she can get in excess of 65mpg using ‘Eco Pro’ driving mode.

On a plus side, Citroen has the Grip Control which I believe is an alchemist 4×4. The reviews I’ve read of it have said it’s fantastic. Even Clarkson tried one on old (best) Top Gear a number of years ago and said it was amazing.

? I will be remembered for nothing but had great fun doing it ?

Thats a large car with a 1.6 180hp petrol engine & standard auto box, getting over 36 is a job well done.

Me? I’d order the 2.0 180hp diesel, loads more grunt with 45mpg average. On the economy runs hes’s doing it would easily top 50mpg.

And its better for the environment.

In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.

My 1.2 petrol Yeti (aerodynamic as a brick) does roughly 430 to a 55l tank and that’s not driving carefully at all!, mostly very short runs to the local shops/doctors/chemist etc. and a couple of 15-18 mile runs a week.  I do a monthly run of around 120 miles but again not at a leisurely pace!  Last trip to Manchester airport it was showing 42mpg 🙂

Considering the heavy right foot I’ve been very impressed with it 😀

Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

Fiat 500X or Jeep Renegade, they spend most of their time in the dealers workshop and the rest of the time on the back of a recovery truck so hardly use any fuel at all! ?

Heh heh heh, I’m actually talking from experience, whilst going for a test drive in the renegade I arrived to a flushed looking young lady who was very nice but had to apologise for the fact I couldn’t do said test drive as the Renegade was in the workshop for mending and had been there a few weeks but they as yet couldn’t fix it, did I want a test drive in the Fiat 500X instead as it’s the same car just a different frock, after a little think I agreed (I was only looking at the Jeep as it had an actual boot you could put things in with the near vertical shape of the back end), after all it had the same engine and almost the same kit/toys etc so off we go.

One and a half miles later I was commenting about a Costa coffee shop we had just passed and could I call in on my way back past as a test in the drive-thru kinda thing when it just stopped, no warning just a strange sort of buzzing/clicking/grinding sound (horrible) and the silence apart from the transmission whining as it quickly slowed us to a stop, luckily I wasn’t going fast and was able to pull off the road completely.

After trying to restart and turn off/on, lock/unlock etc etc etc I concluded it was kaput and suggested we go to the Costa to wait for recovery.

96 minutes later the manager turned up in a big Maserati 4 door (can’t spell the name) and took us back to the showroom. He was full of apologies and offered all sorts of discounts which I politely thanked him for and said I would come back once they had fixed the Jeep but I never did.

I did also thank the woman sales rep who was so nice and ever so embarrassed and apologetic and left her a glowing review, the same can’t be said for the brand I’m afraid and it would take an awful lot for me to even think about trying one of them again.

                      Pleasant but frustrating experience.
