As per title they’re discussing Motability between 4-5pm, it’s a phone in.

Good point by ‘Graham’ in response to a Tory MP complaining about TikTok ers giving advice on how to get a Motability car, “we don’t complain about people using accountants to advise people how to pay less tax”.

August 22, 2025 at 5:25 pm #311695I tried to get on but ran out of time. The usual nonsense from people with neighbours taking the mick. Can call a phone in but not report them to Motability, delightful.
The MP was just making stuff up. He managed to have the majority as both deserving enhanced PIP but not deserving a car. I was desperately trying not to shout at the radio when he was talking about original scheme users had physical disabilities but now you can get them for anxiety. Yes, that’s because in 2014 the Conservative government equalised mental health to physical health in terms of defining disabilities. They’ve since admitted that there were unforeseen consequences to that decision that has resulted in the increases in PIP claimants.

August 22, 2025 at 5:43 pm #311696I only caught the last 20 mins of it. The presenter was more balanced than most, but still some callers were full of utter nonsense, such as the driving instructor who said that the sister of one of his students has a Golf R32 on the scheme. Yeah, right!
I didn’t hear the MP but reference was made later to him saying that you just need a letter from your GP, or some such rubbish.
Why is it impossible for these programmes to do their research and understand the basics, such as the fact that nobody ‘applies for a Motability car’ but it’s an automatic entitlement when you get awarded the higher rate mobility component of PIP. They should take issue with the eligibility criteria for PIP (which would be a fair challenge IMHO) rather than Motability, as you only get the latter if you qualify for the former, but that’s always overlooked 😡
Another thing that is never mentioned is that if the scheme is such a giveaway, why do two thirds of those eligible to join the scheme not do so? Most of them will have determined that they can do better things with their benefit, such as not feeling the need to have a brand new car. Also, the fact that if Motability was scrapped tomorrow, the tax payer wouldn’t save a penny, as all those in the scheme would suddenly start receiving £4k a year in benefits 😡
As @MFillingham correctly states, a lot of these issues are an inevitable consequence of the widening of the definition of ‘disability’, a decision that will be far harder to reverse than to implement!
August 22, 2025 at 6:10 pm #311697MP’s have no real unerstanding of anything if I’m hones and only their to serve their own nests.
As for the driving instructor, one would have hoped he/she would have had more sense than listen to second hand information. The Golf R32 production ended in 2005!
As @Glos-Guy states it will be much harder to alter the definition of “disabilty” than implement, under the equality act 2010, let alone try and reverse what the Tories did in 2014.

Same could be said of disabled people, looking at how selective everyones memory seems to be here.

Yeah no sht. In case no one noticed, that’s a good thing.
Despite you troglodytes assuming that every mental health issue is “a bit of anxiety” or “a bit of sad”, there are mental health issues that can be as severe, if not worse than physical disabilities when it comes to the impact on daily life.
And it’s disgusting to suggest that (and make no mistake, that’s exactly what you’re suggesting, at least have the balls to state it clearly) “people get over it”.
Topped of course with gems like this.

This literally just happened a few weeks ago, and was soundly rejected by both politicians and wider society.
But who’s counting.
Prior: SEAT Ateca Xcellence Lux 1.5 TSI DSG MY19, VW Golf GTE PHEV DSG MY23
Current: Hyundai Ioniq 6 Ultimate
Next: we'll see what's available in 2028.August 22, 2025 at 6:38 pm #311699The descriptors and whole PIP qualification process will be subject to a report due to be presented late summer next year. That will form a new framework in which PIP will be decided.
Im fully aware just how crippling mental health can be, I’ve spent the last 3 years supporting my daughter in getting her anxiety recognised. Treatment is still a while away and she barely capable of going out to places where people will be.
