It’s not range anxiety that still puts me off……..

…. committing to full BEV, neither is it longer fuelling times compared to ICE, I’ve plenty of time.

No, the thing that still makes me baulk at going full BEV is the current chaos of paying for your electricity on the occasions that you do need to use commercial fast charging services. Apps, pre-registering payment cards, this one for those chargers, another one for these chargers etc. What were they thinking?

I know more PAYG with contactless charge points are, slowwwwly, appearing and the government has “suggested” that all new CP’s “should” have contactless card payment ability but why didn’t they do it properly and legislate? And why on earth did the providers start off with the closed club approach in the first place?

If you are wedded to the capitalist system, then you believe the market will sort it out. You make entry into the market as easy as you can. They did the same with domestic energy supply. Just goes to show you can’t just leave the market to sort it out, chaos ensues. It was a worry for me. I am off to France for several weeks in early summer so I have to think that through. According to Zap map there are tons of places, many free ones or contactless ones in the areas I will be. I had the same initial anxiety in the UK, but given the range  (kona) its not a problem and my experiences, save ‘genie’ have all been positive.

Encouraging to know. I was watching a 1000km run in Norway yesterday, oh if only we had infrastructure like that!

6000 miles in as many months in an MG ZS EV. No issues whatsoever. Absolutely recommend with the possible exception of no height adjustment on the passenger seat.

I hope this helps, I saw a video on YouTube from the channel fully charged plus, from what I gather the company in the video essentially agrigates all the different companies and apps under one umbrella making it easier to charge up.

There are quite a few aggregators, Kia/Hyundai has one, Zap-pay is another as is Octopus Electric Juice. These all work in much the same way, add a few pence to the price of the charger you are at to cover the cost of the card and billing.

I don’t think its difficult at all, I have 5 or so cards: Kia Charge, Electric Juice, Shell Recharge, Charge place Scotland and BP Pulse. More than I need and very easy to use.

The straight payment options are also easy, Gridserve, Ionity, Instavolt are all  contactless payment.

I’m picking up my EV in a few months. I must admit, this thread has put my head in a bit of a spin as I will be solely relying on public chargers. I’m really gunna have to sign up to all those suppliers mentioned above to be able to charge when out and about? I’m gunna be wanting to charge anywhere and everywhere!

You will soon get the hang of it & will develop personal preferences for the chargers you want to use. Intranicity is the go-to guy for racking up the miles without a charger – he found it pretty easy going.

Its easier in some ways in Scotland as its mostly all Chargeplace Scotland (CPS) chargers, but the downside is….its mostly all CPS chargers – i.e. if they are not working you have few if any options.

do you have any family/friends with a drive. you could granny charge in theirs and pay them. may be slow but a few hours is useful. my home charger is only running at granny level at moment until i get some cable fixed, and it still charges about 30+% in 6/7hrs.
