      Hi all,

My Outlander has to go into the dealer tomorrow for some warranty investigation. The dealer has advised that their courtesy car has a £1000 insurance excess. I have queried whether this applies to Motability leases and they said it does. Has anyone any experience of this?

Never paid an excess on any car in for a service  ,the garage insure it as a courtesy car ,that’s why they need your license.

They are incorrect.  Any replacement car given to you whilst yours is in for work is automatically covered by your Motability Insurance.

I’ve had this line from dealers in the past.  They really should know better!

Although covered by your Motability insurance, you’re still liable for the excess rate applicable on your Motability policy. This will be much less than the £1,000 quoted.

Some customers may prefer to pay an excess waiver if the dealership offers it.

I can accept that (it is £100). It is the sheer ignorance that winds me up – and this is a dealer who does a lot of motability business, thanks to MG.

Completely agree.  There’s a vast difference between £100 and £1,000!

So many of these dealers are a part of large groups so there’s no excuse for them not knowing the rules.  You would think that their admin people would go through their agreements with Motability with a fine toothcomb and then disseminate the nitty gritty throughout the group.  It’s not as if it’s particularly difficult stuff!

Thanks for the replies, which match the response I received from Motability a few days later: “your [Motability / RSA] insurance policy transfers to courtesy vehicles. If you do not have your insurance certificate, the dealer can always call RSA to confirm your details as long as you are present.”

Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally say the wrong thing.
