Just had a call that our car is the U.K., we will be picking it up towards the end of next week.
I have 100 miles of fuel left, they are charging me £20 for the petrol they put in it so really need to give them it back with less than £10 worth.
What is the least amount of fuel that can be delivered from a pump?
I will do more than 100 miles between now and then so will need to work it out carefully ????

TimIf you’re feeling really petty then you could run out of fuel beforehand and drip feed only what you need from a can.

GJAThat’s kind of where I’m at right now. I used to fill the car to the brim, but lately I’ve been putting in £20 at a time (not that it goes far in my greedy s*d of a car) just in case the new wheels turn up. My dealer charges £25 for the petrol they put in. I’ve a 300 mile round trip over the weekend, so I’ll probably just fill her up this time, but I’m determined whenever the newbie turns up, the current car will be returned with as near to fumes in the tank as I can manage! ?
February 24, 2022 at 8:27 am #178468Is it a sign of the times that dealers charge for petrol in new cars? Our Volvo came with over half a tank, previous BMW about a quarter.

GJAWigwam, I was charged £25 for the fuel in my last (current) Volvo when I collected it in October of 2018. I can’t be sure, but I don’t think I was charged for the fuel in my first Motability car, collected in September of 2015, though that was a Ford rather than a Volvo. I expect it varies from dealer to dealer.
February 24, 2022 at 11:01 am #178472Brydo did they ask you if you wanted fuel put in the car, if they did all very well if you’ve agreed to it but I won’t be too happy about being charged for fuel because the first stop from the dealers is into a supermarket petrol station 300 yards down the road so I’m quite capable of filling up the tank with cheaper petrol and putting in a token amount of fuel doesn’t help me one bit because I still need to fuel up anyway. Oh and if there’s not enough fuel to go 300 yards the RAC will be getting a call because of the penny pinching bar stewards just along the road.
Don’t forget to ask for a VAT receipt for the petrol.
Taking the old car back with minimum fuel is a hard one but I normally manage to get it down to around a quart of a tank and as GJA says fuelling up a few quid at a time is a chore if your a disabled driver, more so when the filler cap is on the other side of the car. ?

RobertI’ve had 6 vehicles on scheme and the only dealer who charged for fuel was Arnold Clark.

ChrisI’ve taken cars back with so little fuel I genuinely thought I was going to run out of fuel on the 20 mile journey to the dealership! I did take a can of petrol in the boot and drove like my granny the whole way there.
I did this because I had a feeling the new car I was due to pick up had zero fuel in too, I was correct as the dealer advised me not to drive past the petrol station a couple of hundred yards down the road…
I did get a Mercedes A200 a few years ago and it was totally full of diesel, the dealer made a point of telling me (and the rest of the showroom) the car was full of fuel.
I wouldn’t allow a dealer to put “£25 worth of fuel in the car” I’d rather take it and fill up knowing there was £25 worth in the car – I’m not saying dealers are untrustworthy but just for my own piece of mind.
So different cars, different dealers, different manufacturers in my experience

Belfast4Please bear in mind quite a lot of motability and lease cars are picked up by trade plate drivers who are self employed. They have to put fuel in out of their own pockets and then claim it back from whoever they are working for and it usually paid at the end of a month. Nothing as bad as arriving to collect a car somewhere and it says 5 miles to empty and the nearest garage is maybe 10/20 miles away and they are on their own. Just bear this in mind please.
February 24, 2022 at 5:35 pm #178515When we picked up our Tiguan a little over 2 years ago the dealer wanted to put in (and charge for) £20. I told them not to bother – the nearest petrol station was less than a mile away and I admit I played the disabled card (I never do that) and sent them a shortly worded email to the effect of “Are you seriously going to hand a disabled driver a brand-new car without enough fuel in it to drive 1200 metres?”
They replied with something to the effect of “Oh, everyone says yes to that, we already put in the £20 but we won’t charge you for it as a courtesy”

February 24, 2022 at 6:32 pm #178527I’m sure they will have a gallon container filled with fuel, if they’ve any brains ?

Belfast4You have obviously no idea how it all works then. Most of them use public transport buses, trains etc. Carrying fuel in containers isn’t really an option no matter how their brain works.
February 24, 2022 at 8:52 pm #178550Belfast your right I have no idea how it works and to be honest I don’t really care. My car will go back with probably 60 miles of fuel left so who ever picks it up will be fine ?

Belfast4That’s a lot better than what you suggested you would like to have done. 60 miles is perfect.
February 25, 2022 at 9:50 am #178592If the closest garage is 20 miles away from the dealer, how does that dealer fill up all their new cars or traded in ones, that arrive with not enough fuel to get 20 miles away? Every dealer i had a car on the scheme from, there is a garage within 1 or 2 mins drive.
I return the cars with the fuel light on and it still can say 25/30 mile when it comes on. It saying 10 miles should be enough, unless you know the garage is further away, why would you leave 60 miles in it, for the next buyer and for people to do test drives in.
Plus it’s part and parcel of their job, that they getting paid for doing. Personally i wouldn’t leave it on fumes neither would i leave 60 miles in it.

SueMy first Motability car had barely enough to get me home…and there are no fuel stations on the way home either, I was on a wing and a prayer hoping it got me to the fuel station near to my house which was also the first fuel station I would arrive at after leaving the dealership.
For my last car, I made sure to say about that when ordering the car and because they wanted to outdo that dealer, I had over half a tank in the car and at no extra cost to me.
February 25, 2022 at 11:12 am #178610Sue now you know how the “trade plate drivers” feel lol.

Possibly but they would be used to it, me as a complete newbie not only to Motability but to a brand new car, assumed that there would be enough fuel to be getting on with for a day or so and not having to be having kittens on the way home.
I’d purchased second hand every time before that (none over £1k) and there was always a good quarter to half a tank thrown in.
March 2, 2022 at 12:29 pm #179132Bring a length of tube and siphon the tank outside, bring lot of mints. lol
