“Big Dave” is knocking it out the park with deals virtually every day. I look on with a bit of envy that most of the deals are in England and as I’m in Central Scotland most of the deals are a couple of hundred miles from me 😞
It got me thinking though as to what the deal would need to be to travel hundreds of miles to get it.
One I noticed recently was the Cupra Tavascan with thousands of pounds off, now if it fitted our needs I would definitely travel a few hundred miles, twice, to get that deal.
So what would the deal need to be for you to travel half way across the country to get?

I went from Glasgow to Gateshead to get my Ioniq 6 cause the Evans Halshaw dealership was matching the £750 from motability.
With my 2 previous EVs I’ve seen deals on offer and phoned around to see if any nearby dealers would match it (or get close enough to make the travelling not worth it?) and both times they did saving £1200 on a Leaf & £800 on an MG5. This time they only offered £500 off but only on stock cars that weren’t colour or spec I wanted.
So to answer your question there is no set amount I’d need to save. It’d depend on whether the amount saved justified the time and expense incurred (I went down 3 times cause wanted to check in with the hand control fitrers) £50 probably not, £500 definitely 😁
Also to add I like driving and visiting places so none of my trips to Gateshead were a chore, I had a day out using various different routes that included visiting a dealership.
February 23, 2025 at 12:29 pm #298181Price match is key, just as Rhodgie says. I worked in retail when I was a student and most days we would get someone coming in our electronics shop with a magazine advert asking us to match the price of a piece of kit, we had to phone the company in question to check they had stock and we’d almost always match the price.
if you see one of Big Dave’s deals but it’s too far, just ask a local dealer to match it, they’ll at least do you a deal and get as close to the price as possible.
February 23, 2025 at 12:32 pm #298182Rhodgie I enjoy driving and would happily drive a few hundred miles for a great deal. If the deal is good enough I suppose you could always stay overnight and make a weekend of it.

I live south of London and most dealers around here are not very good at customer service (too many wealthy people buying cars I assume). We picked up our last two cars from Caffyn’s Eastbourne and Barrett’s Ashford.

It all depends on the deal, if the Glasgow dealer could have got me the colour & spec I wanted I probably would have ordered from here and paid the extra £250 as it would have been easier to nip in and see them, I’d have still done the day trips down south though 😂
We had planned to pick up the Ioniq and head south to York & Harrogate for a few days but that didn’t happen as a few days later we took it to Brighton for a week then the next weekend up to Durness.
Everybody needs to do their own calculations to see whether it works for them, but I like driving so drove to Brechin to see the MG in a particular colour before ordering it from Frasers in Falkirk 😁
February 23, 2025 at 3:03 pm #298192The problem I have is the wife, she doesn’t really like travelling so getting her to and from a dealer hundreds of miles away, twice, could be a problem.

February 23, 2025 at 6:43 pm #298205Definitely, as always, for the right deal i’d travel and it’s great to see some, one, dealers over free hotel for those travelling large distances (over 100 miles).
For my current car i travelled over 100 miles and previous one, i travelled from East coast to Wales twice for the deal.
I’ve 17 months left on my current lease and will, as always, do my extensive research – long list / short list / final 3. And look at the every deal at the time available available everywhere, but none of the dealers in my county, come close to the mark & one large national dealership group i avoid at all costs (from my experience over many years of dealership groups & I’ve been a Motability customer 28 years, last 24 in my county).
There are almost no deals in my county and varying levels of customer service, CRM and knowledge – i personally feel the ‘scheme accreditation’ needs to be more robust.
I’ve found well run dealerships, staff and schemes elsewhere though, in other counties / regions.
Obviously, there’s more and more heavy discounting , incentives and stock for full electric cars on the scheme. partly as there’s a slow down in the private / wider leasing EV market, residuals are tanking, slow infrastructure roll out (plus many can’t have home chargers) and the increase in investment and strategic development of hydrogen cars. The pressure from government, and the big banks that invest in the scheme, for the electric agenda is huge, hence the high number of electric cars on / coming onto the scheme – helps the gov with their numbers.
But respect & thanks, to the dealers who aren’t just discounting electric and / or incentivising Motability customers.

I definitely would think about it if it was in the thousands like the one Cupra is doing now.
February 24, 2025 at 12:31 pm #298256I’ve never seen a deal! But I would consider going nationally.
Skoda Enyaq Race Blue
February 24, 2025 at 1:51 pm #298259I’d travel nationwide for the right deal, I’ve been everywhere for some of my motorcycle purchases over the years, North East Scotland to:
Cupar in Fife, Basingstoke, Hull, Reading, Liverpool & Glasgow.
Used to fly/train/bus to dealer and ride back.
In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.
February 24, 2025 at 2:24 pm #298263Me and the wife drove from east sussex to skoda rainworth at mansfield. We stayed in a hotel overnight then visited the dealer the following day to get a deal on the skoda enyaq sportline which was half price, £2495 to £1249 After taking the cost for petrol and a hotel stay into account the saving of £1150 was not to be sniffed at.
February 24, 2025 at 4:46 pm #298268The two visits in person rule is a pain, with all the technical advances we have you would think FaceTime etc would be acceptable if even lieu of the first visit.
I am a carer and I’d be happy to do the first visit on my own but this isn’t allowed either although I do think they have some leniency in exceptional cases.

I think it might be simply the case of is the vehicle suitable for you needs question and if you do not attend the dealership for the first visit, how would they know you’ve had access to the vehicle to know that or even had a test drive and one could then use that to say that they haven’t, so hence the two visit rule.
Me personally I guess it depends on the deal, but often my choice is not based on a deal but the car that suits me best. Was a few deals local to me but the one issue was how long those car are and I needed something this time, around 4.2m long and an EV.

Always present any deal offers to local dealer first though, give them chance to try and match. I’ve found they’ve been more inclined to do so if the deal is from another branch of the same national dealership.
