How do you choose your car?

I know some folk just decide that they like the look of a car and order.

A friend and myself check the space to make sure we fit in first and foremost.

But I have to go one stage further and go through all the numbers and details. Whats got vs what it hasn’t. I am compelled to know what I am getting, or not! It’s like an obsession!!

Because I can not readily test drive, I do pour over the brouchers. But as the saying goes, cars, like beer, there’s no such thing as a bad one. Or is there?

Same here as well as youtube reviews (preferably owner reviews). Still made some bad decisions though and what I really want is rarely on the scheme lol.

first and foremost i have to be able to get in and out comfortably and be in a comfortable position to drive.

so that means usually suv type but then it involves actually getting in and out as it seems the shape of the door opening and windscreen rake has a lot to do with it. for example the chr and arona and the original kona didnt work but the countryman and the juke do. so even after internet homework i have to get out and sit in the model i am considering. oddly though and there arent many some 3 door hatches can work.

then its cost to run electric is out as cant charge from home, so it will be hyrid or petrol.

after that its all would likes, mainly winter stuff, heated washers, windscreen, mirrors etc not fussed about steering or seats.i prefer leather but so long as its comfortable. my music is all on usb so need that the rest i could do without my phone is off when driving so as long as the car has a reasonable satnav thats all i need. in fact i would e happy if they removed pretty much all the apps etc.

i have 14 months to go on my lease and my current long list to sit in is:

          juke tekna

          symbioz

kona as i think the new one is a bit bigger.

          quashqai tekna

          hrv

          countryman

          cx5

          terramar

          xtrail

and the ringer maybe mini convertible.

@kezo – yup, I’ve watched all of YouTube I think!!

            @mitch
            – I’ve had a CX5 and it was great. MPG was not great. A friend has just picked up the X-Trail and it has a massive boot, it’s quick off the mark but again, real world MPG isn’t brilliant, apparantly. But then, it is four wheel drive.

yes the cx5 is down the list as far as running costs below the countryman which is slightly better. the x-trail i was looking to stretch to the e-power hybrid which isnt too bad. the symbioz is claimed 60mpg so is up towards the top. the juke i currently have the nconnecta so mpg wise its ok its just the seats not too sure about. the mini ragtop well if i can get in and out who cares a 2.0l gokart whats not too like lol.

i keep coming back to the hrv at the moment for £115. on wpms its a lot of car with pretty much everything you would like as well as need.

First I check the height, generally if it’s lower than 1.6m I’m not going to get in!

Being almost 6’6″ with poor “bendability” I need something tall, however, enough height isn’t always the answer!.

Nissan Ariya, very tall at 1.66m, no use whatsoever, steering wheel, even on fully raised position, was hitting my thighs!.

Toyota BZ4X, 1.65m, couldn’t even get into it, space between the floor/sill and top of door opening was just too small to bend down and get into!.

Skoda Enyaq (present car) 1.616m, can get into that OK, just manage to get under the top of the door opening 🙂

After that it’s seat comfort and if the center console bangs into my left knee or not.  After that I’m happy enough no matter what make it is 🙂

Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

I make a shortlist of cars that I like the look of and then test drive them if possible.

I use a little spreadsheet to compare the spec and AP and then I decide.

I have gone for the Nissan Ariya after having a Qashqai Tekna+ for the past 3 years and I collect it on March 6th.

It has to be a 4 wheel drive SUV type for me. Have a steep drive and live next to a steep hill which gets blocked in the snow. Has to be easy to get in/out of without banging my head. Comfortable to drive, have a home charger fitted so now have an EV6 which is great. The AP has shot up since we got it, wouldn’t be affordable now.

I’m amazed at how many people seem to order a car and know nothing about it, what is included, what it has and how it performs. Some seem to walk into a disaster and order a car that really isn’t suitable and seem surprised with the car.

How do people buy anything in life?!
