      Hi

I’m hoping that some of you may be able to help me in my quest to find my next car!

I do have some requirements because of my disability (Right-sided CVA) but would also really like to get an electric car for me next vehicle on the scheme but i’m not sure if any electric vehicles on the scheme have what Motability deem to be essential. Hope that’s making sense so far? ha ha!

The car must have the following:

      automatic gearbox

      push button ignition

      power drivers seat

      auto tailgate

I would also like, but not essential –

      heater seats

flat load or near flat load boot for my wheelchair or rollater and crutch’s

I’ve tried looking through all the car manufacturers but just end up getting confused! Also, I would really prefer an electric car because of the cost implications.

I do like the volvo recharge PHEV and Ford Kuga PHEV but i don’t know if i would get free charging point installation on those? I also like the Peugeot e 2008 and Hyundia Kona electric but I don’t think they have the electric tailgate?

Please can anyone help? it’s driving me mad!

      Thanks in advance,

      Rachel

I forgot to add that Motability have kindly told me that they will provide some financial assistance towards my next car, providing that it has all the things I have listed as essential.

        Thanks,

I also forgot to add that I was told by a Motability advisor last month, that the Mercedes EQA was a high likely to be joining the scheme this quarter. That looks unlikely now though after Boris reduced the amount of the EV Grant scheme.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>I know the Kona has everything you need except the electric tailgate. Good luck with your search. If I come across any useful info I will post it on this thread.</p>

the kia soul and ds 3 crossback are smaller suv types but again i suspect the power tailgate will be an issue.

full electric vehicles on motability get a charger but phevs dont.

I’ve just picked up a Kona, has everything you want and more… except the power tailgate, but it is very well balanced and takes very little effort to operate.

you’d have to be quick though to get the bargain ones, but I’d highly recommended it

All electric vehicles are effectively automatic as there’s no gearbox just forward & backwards.

Nearly all are button start if not all.

Kona premium se has powered seat plus heated & cooled but no power tailgate as mentioned. If it ticks all the other boxes it might be the case of getting a kit to add it to a Kona if nothing else suitable.

Mazda cx30 has everything you want at GT Sport trim but it’s a mild hybrid not an EV & the higher trims are pricey.

Can’t think of any EVs that meet all requirements yet.

Rachelk, if it helps any, the PHEVs you mention will charge off an ordinary domestic socket in about 5 hours, or overnight,  so no need to have a charging point installed..

Thank you everyone for your helpful comments. Intranicity,  the Kona does really sound perfect in every way except for the lack of the power tailgate but as Richard says, it may be possible to have this fitted after collection of the car, assuming Motability are okay with it?. I will call them on Tuesday when they re-open to discuss it. It is something that i will look into as I’ve had quite a lot of falls due to loss of balance when loading equipment into my current car.

My Brain Injury nurse at Headway helped me to apply for financial assistance through the Motability grants team and they have offered to help towards the advance payment, which i’m very grateful for. The only requirement from them is that the electric tailgate is standard on the model that I choose, or they won’t fund it. The reason why i’m so keen to have a EV is for the running cost and environmental factors. I was told that the Mercedes EQA was going to be joining the scheme but not now, since Boris reduced the allowance.

Sorry if i’m repeating myself, or if my grammer is poor, I used to function better than this pre-stroke ha ha!

Also, If I don’t end up getting the Kona but decide on a PHEV, I hadn’t realised that I could just manage with a normal domestic socket, thanks Wigwam! I mainly make short journeys now so could be a possibility.

                        Thanks, Rachel x

Pretty sure Motability will say no to modifying a car to get a power lift tailgate, RachelK.  If your local journeys are 20 -25 miles a day or less, then the XC40 T5 Recharge looks to have what you want and particularly a completely flat load floor.  In what they call Pure mode there’s seems no reason to have to use the engine.
