I’ve never been one for washing the car every week but I hope to keep our Ioniq 6 looking as good as new for as long as possible and that includes keeping the new car leather smell.
so had a look on line and there is a plethora of protective coatings on the market some that suggest “you won’t need to wash your car for six months” where do I sign up for that 😂. Off course there is nothing like personal recommendations so any advice you have would be much appreciated including smellies you use.

Interior smell is hard to hold, we kept our “new-car-smell” for around 1.5 years by simply keeping it clean (no detergents, just good ol’ dust rag), and no drinks nor food in it. Didn’t even get takeaway in it.
For the outside, hand wash of course. Protective coatings are a bit misleading, most of the stuff they sell you isn’t actually a coating as such – a “real” ceramic coating, which does last for 6+ months (you’ll still have to wash the car though), will cost you a lot more than the tenner for a bottle of some random stuff.
For us, basically “the usual”. Handwash only, decent foam lance, wheel brush, two buckets. For foam i use Autoglym Polar Blast, served me well so i don’t bother looking further. For Shampoo i use Autoglym Polar Wash, also applied through the foam lance – you CAN get away with one bucket that way, if you desire. I still use two, but it’s more habit. For coating, it depends. I have had great results with Autobrite MagiSeal, but i’ll give you the best tip ever: realise that the paint on new cars is actually awful, and the best thing you could do is to give it a paint correction. Even just claying will do wonders, i promise you. I clayed the Golf top to bottom, and it was night and day. After that, as mentioned, either MagiSeal if you’re lazy, or a (good) wax. I’d suggest Soft99 Fusso Coat dark (japanese brand) – it’s amazing. Pretty dear for a wax, but worth the weight in gold, genuinely. Going to be one of the first things i’ll do to the car as well, once i’ve read into waxing pearl paints (not sure if there’s something to consider, haven’t looked into that yet).
I didn’t put as much effort into a decontaminator, i just got an Amazon grade Iron/Fallout remover, never really felt the need to go balls to the wall on that front.
Important is a decent snow lance for pre-wash, decent mitt for washing (and decent microfibre towels for drying), and some good ol’ elbow grease. If you’re confident, definitely clay the car down, too (i know i will). If you do, get a reasonably decent detailer spray for lubricant (something like Meguires Quik Detailer is good enough, and it’s spelled correctly).

Previous car:Peugeot 308 GT Premium 1.2 Pure tech Petrol.August 20, 2025 at 12:44 pm #311617I tend to use Bouncers or Auto Finesse, which ever is cheapest and can get hold of at the time, but any decent brand will do.
Bouncer’s Bead Juice – nano tech exterior protection sealant, lasts about 3 – 4 months or Auto Finese Ceramic spray was, lasts around 3 months
Auto Finesse Citrus Power – Bug & Grime Remover
Auto Finesse – Crystal or Repel glass cleaner (Repel is betters as rain/sleat just beads off, however, Bouncers Bead juice is as good)
Airfreshner – Tumble dryer sheet
Auto Finesse – Spritz interior Detailing Spray
Auto Finesse – Hide Conditioner or cleaner / however, because the seats in most cars are protected leather and not semi-aniline or aniline, it won’t smell of leather regardless what you put on for very long if at all. Your better with a leather smelly
Or go through a hand carwashonce a month and have inside & out cleaned!
The new car smell is off gassing off the plastics etc, to keep it use a new car smell airfreshner.
Not bad for a car coming up to 6 years!
August 21, 2025 at 8:47 am #311651Wish I had the physical ability to clean to the above standards but alas. The Mrs uses a local DIY lance place on the way home from shopping every so often. If I actually owned the car I’d be more particular.
August 21, 2025 at 9:24 am #311652Forgot to mention, if you use any spray-on product (be it MagiSeal through the foam lance or a spray-on wax etc), make sure you don’t get it on the windscreen.
Most, if not all products i’ve played with severely restrict visibility in heavy rain, because while the water pearls off, it leaves “microscopic” beads behind, making it look like your window is milky. In some cars it can lead to the front camera (the one the car uses for sign recognition, matrix LED light etc) becoming unusable.
Which wouldn’t be a particular issue, if it didn’t also make your wipers judder/jump.
For that reason i dislike Rain-X etc as well, never had a good experience with any water repellent on the windshield.

August 22, 2025 at 1:30 am #311684The best product I.ve used recently, and it does what it says on the tin (or plastic bottle) is Jennychem Hyperwax. It was about £20 odd cant remember. Put a little in a foam gun spray it, leave for a minute an towel dry. Its beads water for 2-3 months.
Never had anything like this. The 2 lutre bottle is gonna last a long time. Do the windows s well, dont have to buy RainX ever again.

I’ve never noticed a problem with micro beading and love the stuff!
@Brydo if you ask 20 people what they recommend, I suspect you would get 20 different recommendations. I have used Poorboy’s products in the past, when cleaning the car was a pleasure. Now I get the car valeted every six months and don’t mind which products are used.Skoda Enyaq Race Blue
August 25, 2025 at 2:39 pm #311771I have 3 autoglym products and usually get away with a hands free wash. I start with their Snow foam, spray on from the pressure washer and was off after a few minutes. Then there’s a more direct cleaner that will remove any more stubborn grime. If you’ve neglected the car for a while or it’s been somewhere particularly dirty you may need to wipe the body work at this stage, just to ensure all the grime has gone. Then they have a water repellent spray. It literally goes on the pressure washer, you put a layer over the whole car and can see it working when you rinse it off.
Chrome North West do a fantastic traffic film remover, it’s potent stuff so you can dilute it quite severely unless the car’s a proper mess. Again I’ve used that instead of the normal shampoo stage and I’ve not had to wipe the car. If it’s properly minging, just apply a relatively strong mix and it’ll take off just about anything. If there’s something stubborn, just put the jet closer and it’ll remove what’s refusing to go.
