I found some information on one of the octopus Energy sites, if the moderators allow it I will provide some links.
Gas Combi are set at a default setting 70 degree C or some case even higher, apparently anything over 50 degrees C for hot water and 55 degrees C is wasted energy.
I have just checked our combi boiler it is on the Eco setting 70 degrees C, I have now turned them down to 50/55 degrees C.
Hope this help you guys with the rising energy costs.

You can (and should) do the same with any gas boiler that is only heating water in the summer. Turn it down until what comes out of the tap from the storage tank is hot enough. Ours is set at 55. Condensing boilers are more efficient at lower temperatures and heat loss from the storage tank is lower.
August 18, 2022 at 1:14 pm #194607I have my combi set at Water 50 and heating 55.
I have recently somdproofed the lounge and replaced the fire with a hole in wall electric fire with built in projector soley for the flame effect. However I’m kicking my self I dindn’t fit a log burner.
August 18, 2022 at 1:45 pm #194618<p style=”text-align: left;”>Mine is set at similar. 50c I think. No tank of course now so it’s water on demand. On Tues tea time I notice the smart meter said I used 75p in gas. Wish my leccy was lower tho. I seem to use a lot.</p>

Also like the redundancy of having a secondary heat source should things go wonky over winter.
And did I mention the wife wants one? Brownie points to be had.
Our current cheapo gas/electric fixed tariff (2.7p/17p) runs until May ’23 , so expecting mucho bill shock at that point. Even on that tariff our bill is currently £300 a month, our gas use is insane and it’s just the heating and hot water, everything else is electric. Fairly new Worcester Bosch combi boiler – just no insulation/too many big rooms/single glazing.
In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.
August 18, 2022 at 2:04 pm #194622Excellent post, thank you 🙂
I went online and got the instructions for my Combi, CH was at 75 (now 55) and HW was 55 (now 50)
Hopefully save a bit of money 😀
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!
August 18, 2022 at 2:29 pm #194626Thankyou for the feedback, hopefully I shall save some money on gas.

I’m toying with the idea of fitting one in the dining room and opening the double doors in the living room. Both rooms are large and needs seious thinking about, but no doubt I would need a fair sized log burner. My mate is coming service the boiler next week and is going to have a look at the optins.
August 18, 2022 at 3:07 pm #194631We installed an Aga log burner when we built a house in Wales it was part of the planning permission, it kicked out loads of heat.

August 18, 2022 at 3:18 pm #194634We have actually switched off our gas boiler. We use an electric shower, dishwasher for the dishes etc. We´ll see in September/October what we decide to do about heating.
Is this more an off topic?
August 19, 2022 at 6:21 pm #194724i was told its not a great idea to switch a boiler off for a lengthy period as they may apparently need looked at when you decide to switch back on again, although i don’t know if this is true or not. ive never done it myself, and i always just turn the stat down, and use water when an if far washing etc

August 20, 2022 at 3:51 pm #194811I turned my thermostat down to 19c a few months ago.
I mainly do the washing up in cold water, only me and the cat here now so there’s never enough to put in the dishwasher. Combi boiler gets a 15min blast for a shower and that’s about it at the moment.
My lowest gas usage was .5 meter units last week as I had a shower at my sons and used his electric 🙂

August 20, 2022 at 5:24 pm #194817Our heating is set at 5 degree C for the past few months, even though we are still seeing on average £22.00 a month, our variable gas rate is approximately 7.5 pence a kW, by January next year this is going to double ?

Ak him if we can all come round 🙂
My heating is off at the moment but do fire up water to have a shower.
August 20, 2022 at 7:09 pm #194833mine is set about 14c i think.. it wont get that cold for a while in house yet. insulation in house is very good fortunately now. its 23.5 c and 59% hum at moment still although its not reached 20/21 for a while. also trying to keep humidity up will help with the feel of the temp indoors(within reason) i have humidifiers. it can get below 30% here in winter without them.

Does anyone else have a point where they just give in? What is the average temperature setting?
October 1, 2022 at 10:22 am #197202I’ve got my thermo set currently at 19c. any lower and my arthritis is unmanageable

Last Car: Toyota C-HR Excel Hybrid...4 way 80kg hoistOctober 1, 2022 at 10:23 am #197203We have used the Central Heating once, yesterday, to run the system. It’s a 24kw system and the house has wall, floor and loft insulation and is good at retaining heat. It cost 90p for 1 hour yesterday, £1.25 from today. We have a hall thermostat and if it falls below 17c, we will put it on. I am hoping 4 hours a day will suffice. At night, 21.30 we put on 2x 2kw electric heaters which warm the house before we go to bed and therefore in the morning it is a couple of degree warmer. Even with the £2500 cap, many will struggle. Just read a crass comment on MSN that gas is still cheap!
October 1, 2022 at 10:32 am #197205well in a way its a lot cheaper than electricity(about a 1/4); that doesnt make it cheap tho. the 2500 cap is just an average and mine has been quoted by my company as nearer 2800. (end terrace) althouh ive plenty loft and new wall insulation plus double glazed and am on the eastern side of block which shelters me from 80% of the winds. im still working through emptying my old freezer before it goes off for good. ive a newish chest one which is probably cheaper and one freezer will have to do. a few other things have been decommisioned too lol
