For BMW X1 owners – tools/scissor jack

Our X1 is going back tomorrow. When we bought it we paid extra for a space saver because we didn’t want run flat tyres. I’ve removed that so I can sell it separately. What I can’t remember is whether the jack, wrench and the polystyrene holder were included.

The holder has the above plus the towing eye hook and locking wheel nut key, both of those need to be returned. But if we had got the car with runflat tyres would that holder have still been included, would it have just contained a can of goo? Otherwise where would the eye and locking key be kept. The invoice shows the jack as an optional extra with zero cost so I’d imagine if you buy a spare wheel they gave it for free.

This is what the boot looked like with the spare. The polystyrene holder inside the wheel can store the tools but they were in the separate one to the left.

I’m thinking I might remove the jack/wrench too and leave the rest in the other holder.

I’d just take it if the car has runflats.

@Glos Guy has an X1. Hopefully he can tell you whats he has.

The car doesn’t have runflats, we didn’t want them. So I’m not sure what would actually be supplied in the boot if the car did have them. I’m assuming nothing, as on runflats the idea is you limp it to the nearest garage. Unless the tyre is completely destroyed.

The space saver is an optional extra you have to pay for with BMW but I don’t know if the jack is included because we bought that or it’s given for free if you chose normal tyres. I’ve taken it out though as I think it’ll make the space saver more sellable! I doubt if they’ll check anyway.

If you had paid extra for a sunroof would you be taking that from the car.

Bottle of gunk and small 12v pump is all any of my cars with no spare had.

You’re just right to take them out and get yourself a few pound back for them.

if you remove the spare tyre etc that is fine but you will have to supply the tyre repair kit (liquid) and 12v tyre pump and the holder for these otherwise you will be returning a vehicle that is not road legal which the dealer can refuse or notify motability and they can then pass these charges to you, so beware

That sounds like a lot of tosh. Never heard of that happening on a Motability car.

When I handed my car back the lass went out an done the checks on the car an said its good for the GCB.  Then she asked me if the car had a spare or the gunk can, I replied I had not  looked and dont know, so she marked it as having a spare.

If you follow your logic through, given your statement that the dealer can reject the car, that means the handover is stopped, the Motability customer has to go away in their old car and the dealer is left with a car registered to a customer that is denied the new car. It is now a second hand vehicle. What are the dealer or Motability going to do with that??

Hi done this for the last 12 years.  You can remove the spare and everything that comes with it and you do not have to provide a replacement solution.  Check with Motability but unless it’s changed you should be hunky dory.

Obviously you can’t take extras like that! We paid extra for rear privacy glass but the cost of that was worth it for us. A wheel and toolkit is a bit different. I could’ve bought it after getting the car but chose the convenience of ordering at the time of placing the order. Either way it’s removable so staying with me!

You don’t even get a 12v pump with BMW, we didn’t anyway. Didn’t even get a can of gunk, not that I would use it anyway.

As above, the car didn’t even come with these, just a jack and wrench. Besides, a bottle of gunk would be out of date after 6 years so I definitely wouldn’t be replacing that.

Didn’t even get asked about the car we were returning. He went outside, had a quick look around and said it’s in really good condition for it’s age. Just one small door ding that someone caused. So happy days! ??

Thanks, good to know others have done it. The car is with the dealer and they authorised the GCB.

My X1 is the newer facelift model, which looks different from the one in the photo. I can’t look at mine now as the car is in the UK and I am not, but having had a puncture recently (because the car unfortunately doesn’t have run flats) I know that there is a tool kit in the boot that contains a pump, can of gunk, towing eye, alloy wheel locking key. Maybe something else.

Personally I wouldn’t be removing items from a car when returning it, especially items that relate to safety. That’s not something that my conscience could live with.

As long as you’ve paid for it as an extra and it’s not part of the fabric of the car ie. Sunroof or upgraded seats etc. then you  can remove it.  If you pay for a spare then you don’t get gunk or pump.

From a safety point of view all the cars will go to a central point to be checked over and things like hoists removed and binned (son used to do this job) missing items will either be replaced or sold without as these 9/10 are going to auction and dealers.
